In environmental monitoring applications, having multiple cameras focus on common scenery increases robustness of the system. To save energy based on user demand, successive refinement image coding is important, as it allows us to progressively request better image quality. By exploiting the broadcast nature and correlation between multiview images, we investigate a two-camera setup and propose a novel two-encoder successive refinement scheme which imitates a ping-pong game. For the bivariate Gaussian case, we prove that this scheme is successively refinable on the theoretical rate-distortion limit of distributed coding (Wagner surface) under arbitrary settings. For stereo-view images, we develop a practical successive refinement coding algorithm using the same idea. The simulation results show that this scheme operates close to the distributed coding bound.

Background: The benefits of the totally laparoscopic right hemicolectomy have been established, but its adoption has been limited by the challenges of intracorporeal suturing. While simulation is effective for training advanced surgical skills, no dedicated simulation-based course exists for intracorporeal ileo-transverse anastomosis (ICA). This study aimed to develop and validate a simulation module for training in ICA.

Sensitivity to motion direction is a feature of visual neurons that is essential for motion perception. Recent studies have suggested that direction selectivity is re-established at multiple stages throughout the visual hierarchy, which contradicts the traditional assumption that direction selectivity in later stages largely derives from that in earlier stages. By recording laminar responses in areas 17 and 18 of anesthetized cats of both sexes, we aimed to understand how direction selectivity is processed and relayed across 2 successive stages: the input layers and the output layers within the early visual cortices.

In the realm of petroleum extraction, well productivity declines as reservoirs deplete, eventually reaching a point where continued extraction becomes economically unfeasible. To counteract this, artificial lift techniques are employed, with gas injection being a prevalent method. Ideally, unrestricted gas injection could maximize oil output.

Bioretention systems offer advantages in controlling non-point source pollution from runoff rainwater. However, the systems frequently encounter challenges, including insufficient stability of nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Limited research has been performed on bioretention systems which integrate actual data from non-point source pollution cases for the quantitative and qualitative refinement of initial and non-initial rainwater.

Objective: Natural language processing (NLP) can enhance research studies for febrile infants by more comprehensive cohort identification. We aimed to refine and validate an NLP algorithm to identify and extract quantified temperature measurements from infants aged 90 days and younger with fevers at home or clinics prior to emergency department (ED) visits.
Patients And Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study using electronic health record (EHR) data from 17 EDs in 10 health systems that are part of the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network Registry.
