Background: Haemophilus influenzae requires heme for aerobic growth and possesses multiple mechanisms to obtain this essential nutrient.

Methods: An insertional mutation in tonB was constructed and the impact of the mutation on virulence and fitness in a chinchilla model of otitis media was determined. The tonB insertion mutant strain was significantly impacted in both virulence and fitness as compared to the wildtype strain in this model.

Conclusions: The tonB gene of H. influenzae is required for the establishment and maintenance of middle ear infection in this chinchilla model of bacterial disease.

The relative accessibility and simplicity of vestibular sensing and vestibular-driven control of head and eye movements has made the vestibular system an attractive subject to experimenters and theoreticians interested in developing realistic quantitative models of how brains gather and interpret sense data and use it to guide behavior. Head stabilization and eye counter-rotation driven by vestibular sensory input in response to rotational perturbations represent natural, ecologically important behaviors that can be reproduced in the laboratory and analyzed using relatively simple mathematical models. Models drawn from dynamical systems and control theory have previously been used to analyze the behavior of vestibular sensory neurons.

A combined surface science/microreactor approach was applied to examine interface effects in ethylene hydrogenation on carbon-supported Ag, Au, and Cu nanoparticle catalysts. Turnover frequencies (TOFs) were substantially higher for supported catalysts than for (unsupported) polycrystalline metal foils, especially for Ag. Spark ablation of the corresponding metals on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and carbon-coated grids yielded nanoparticles of around 3 nm size that were well-suited for characterization by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high-resolution (scanning) transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM/STEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX).

Background: Homeless-experienced persons that present in the Emergency Department (ED) often fail to receive follow-up primary care. To inform implementation of a post-ED patient navigation model, we engaged homeless-experienced Veterans to identify barriers to primary care and the acceptability of a peer-led intervention within the ED.
