Objective: To explore the distribution and influence factors of protein C (PC), protein S (PS) and antithrombin (AT) activities and to determine the prevalence of their deficiencies in the Chinese Han healthy population.

Methods: Healthy volunteers including blood donors and individuals for routine check-up were recruited from 4 Chinese medical centers. The plasma levels of PC, PS and AT activities were measured. The plasma levels of activities were measured by chromogenic substrate assay (AT and PC) and clotting assay (PS).

Results: A total of 3493 healthy Chinese adults had been recruited in this study. Males had higher PS and PC activities than females, especially for PS (P < 0.01). PC activities increased with age in both sexes but decreased in men after 50 years old. There was no significant change with age were of PS in 50 years old, while there was a decline in males and a rise in females above 50 years old. AT tended to increase with age in women but decreased with age in men after 50 years old. Based on the age and gender, the general prevalence of PC, PS and AT deficiencies in the general Chinese Han population were 1.15%, 1.49% and 2.29%, respectively.

Conclusion: PC, PS and AT activities have correlation with age and gender in Chinese Han population. Reference range should be laid down and deficiencies should be identified

Background: This study aims to explore the impact of the National Volume-based Procurement Policy in Guangdong Province on hospitalization costs for total knee arthroplasty inpatients.

Methods: Interrupted time-series analysis were used to examine the expenses associated with total knee arthroplasty for inpatients at a hospital in Guangzhou between May 10, 2021, and December 26, 2023. The period was divided into two phases based on the implementation of the policy, the pre-policy phase (May 10, 2021, to April 30, 2022) and the post-policy phase (May 1, 2022, to December 26, 2023).

Waardenburg syndrome type 2 (WS2) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by congenital sensorineural hearing loss, blue iris, and abnormal pigmentation of the hair and skin. WS2 is genetically heterogeneous, often resulting from pathogenic mutations in SOX10 gene. We identified a novel heterozygous frameshift mutation in SOX10 (NM_006941.

Unlabelled: Rubus chingii Hu fruit (RHF) is a medicinal and edible resource with excellent biological activities. Currently, the existing identification markers can't meet the needs of RHF quality control. This study collected RHF from cultivation fields of three origins [Qiandaohu (QDH), Lishui (LS), and Fuyang (YF)] at green, green to yellow, yellow to orange, and mature stages (G, G to Y, Y to O, M).

Peptide hormones in plants.

Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, 100093, China.

Peptide hormones are defined as small secreted polypeptide-based intercellular communication signal molecules. Such peptide hormones are encoded by nuclear genes, and often go through proteolytic processing of preproproteins and post-translational modifications. Most peptide hormones are secreted out of the cell to interact with membrane-associated receptors in neighboring cells, and subsequently activate signal transductions, leading to changes in gene expression and cellular responses.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition affecting around 50 million people worldwide. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) have emerged as a promising source for cellular therapy due to their ability to differentiate into multiple cell types and their paracrine effects. However, the direct injection of BMMSCs can lead to potential unpredictable impairments, prompting a renewed interest in their paracrine effects for AD treatment.
