In the crystal structure of the title complex, [YbCl(2)(C(18)H(15)N(5))(CH(3)OH)(2)]Cl, the pseudo-penta-gonal-bipyramidal coordination geometry of the Yb(III) cation is composed of three N atoms from one cis-(±)-2,4,5-tris-(pyridin-2-yl)imidazoline (HL) ligand, two O atoms from two methanol mol-ecules and two Cl(-) anions. Chains are formed along [010] through N-H⋯Cl, O-H⋯Cl and O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds.

The title compound, [Yb(C(5)HF(6)O(2))(2)(C(20)H(14)N(4))(H(2)O)]Cl·CH(3)OH·H(2)O, adopts an eight-coordinated geometry around the Yb(III) atom consisting of a 4'-(4-pyrid-yl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (pytpy) ligand, two 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexa-fluoro-acetyl-acetonate (hfac) anions and an aqua ligand. In the solid state, the compound forms supra-molecular chains running along the b-axis via inter-molecular hydrogen bonds between the Yb-OH(2) unit and the N-atom donor of the 4-pyridyl pendant of pytpy, with an O⋯N distance of 2.686 (4) Å.

Organic synthetic methodology in the 21st century aims to conform to the principles of green sustainable chemistry (GSC) and we may expect that in the future, the realization of GSC will be an important objective for chemical industries. An important aim of synthetic organic chemistry is to implement waste-free and environmentally-benign industrial processes using Lewis acids as versatile as aluminum chloride. A key technological objective of our work in this area has been to achieve a "catalyst recycling system that utilizes the high activity and structural features of fluorous Lewis acid catalysts".

[reaction: see text] Terminal acetylenes containing hydroxy and carboxylic acid groups were subjected to Sonogashira coupling with 4-bromo-2,6-bis[(R)-4-phenyloxazolin-2-yl]pyridine and the resulting pybox derivatives were immobilized on Tentagel resins. Ytterbium(III) chloride complexes of the polymeric ligands catalyzed the addition of trimethylsilyl cyanide to benzaldehyde with 80-81% ee. The ligands were reused more than 30 times without any loss in selectivity or activity, and the metal complexes could be recovered and reused at least four times, although with slightly decreasing activity.

The new ytterbium(II) thiocyanate complex [Yb(NCS)2(thf)2] (1), synthesised by redox transmetallation between [Hg(SCN)2] and ytterbium metal in THF at room temperature, gave monomeric, eight coordinate [Yb-(NCS)2(dme)3] (2, dme = 1,2-dimethoxyethane) on crystallisation from DME, and is a powerful, synthetically useful reductant. Thus, oxidation of 1 with Hg(SCN)2, Hg(C6F5)2/HOdpp (HOdpp = 2,6-diphenylphenol), TlCp (Cp = C5H5 or CH3C5H4), Tl(Ph2pz) (Ph2pz = 3,5-diphenylpyrazolate) and CCl3CCl3 in THF yielded the ytterbium(II) complexes [Yb(NCS)3(thf)4] (3), [Yb-(NCS)2(Odpp)(thf)3](4), [Yb(NCS)2Cp-(thf)3] (Cp = C5H5 (5), CH3C5H4 (6)), [Yb(NCS)2(Ph2pz)(thf)4] (7) and [Yb(NCS)2Cl(thf)4] (8). In the solid state, complexes 4, 6 and 7 were shown by X-ray crystallography to be six, eight and eight coordinate monomers, respectively.
