We present a method of fabricating Ge-doped SiO2 fibers with corrugations around their full circumference for a desired length in the longitudinal direction. The procedure comprises three steps: hydrogenation of Ge-doped SiO2 fibers to increase photosensitivity, recording of Bragg gratings with ultraviolet light to achieve modulation of refractive index, and chemical etching. Finite-length, radially corrugated fibers may be used as couplers. Corrugated tapered fibers are used as high energy throughput probes in scanning near-field optical microscopy.

Silica-Encapsulated Germania Colloids as 3D-Printable Glass Precursors.

Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, Creighton University, 2500 California Plaza, Omaha, Nebraska 68178, United States.

Core-shell colloids make attractive feedstocks for three-dimensional (3D) printing mixed oxide glass materials because they enable synthetic control of precursor dimensions and compositions, improving glass fabrication precision. Toward that end, we report the design and use of core-shell germania-silica (GeO-SiO) colloids and their use as precursors to fabricate GeO-SiO glass monoliths by direct ink write (DIW) 3D printing. By this method, GeO colloids were prepared in solution using sol-gel chemistry and formed oblong, raspberry-like agglomerates with ∼15 nm diameter primary particles that were predominantly amorphous but contained polycrystalline domains.

High Sensitivity Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor Based on a Ge-Doped Defect and D-Shaped Microstructured Optical Fiber.

Sensors (Basel)

April 2022

Post-Graduated Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Technology Center, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, Natal 59078-970, Brazil.

In this work a plasmonic sensor with a D-Shaped microstructured optical fiber (MOF) is proposed to detect a wide range of analyte refractive index (RI ;na) by doping the pure silica (SiO2) core with distinct concentrations of Germanium Dioxide (GeO2), causing the presentation of high spectral sensitivity. In this case, the fiber is shaped by polishing a coating of SiO2, on the region that will be doped with GeO2, in the polished area, a thin gold (Au) layer, which constitutes the plasmonic material, is introduced, followed by the analyte, in a way which the gold layer is deposited between the SiO2. and the analyte.

Using tailor-made sub-mm dimension doped-silica fibres, thermoluminescent dosimetric studies have been performed for α-emitting sources of RaCl (the basis of the Bayer Healthcare product Xofigo®). The use of RaCl in the palliative treatment of bone metastases resulting from late-stage castration-resistant prostate cancer focuses on its favourable uptake in metabolically active bone metastases. Such treatment benefits from the high linear energy transfer (LET) and associated short path length (<100µm) of the α-particles emitted by Ra and its decay progeny.

Over the past decade and more, considerable interest has been shown in the thermoluminescence (TL) properties of silica-based single-mode optical fibres, in particular investigating potential ionising radiation dosimetry applications. Herein, study has been made of TL glow curve, dose response, reproducibility and fading of 6mol% Ge-doped silica, fabricated in-house and produced in the form of cylindrical fibres. Three different pairings of doped-core and silica cladding diameters were produced: (40, 241)µm, (80, 483)µm and (100, 604)µm.

An investigation has been made of glass beads and optical fibres as novel dosimeters for small-field photon radiation therapy dosimetry. Commercially available glass beads of largest dimension 1.5 mm and GeO2-doped SiO2 optical fibres of 5 mm length and 120 µm diameter were characterized as thermoluminescence dosimeters.
