This study addresses an unexplained finding in the alcoholism treatment field: despite the health and socioeconomic disparities that exist between blacks and whites at intake, blacks and whites achieve equivalent treatment outcomes. Using Project MATCH data, this study explores religiousness and spirituality as strengths in the African American community that may account in part for equivalent outcomes. Using binary logistic regression, this study found that as purpose in life increased, blacks were more likely to achieve sobriety than whites. This study provides evidence that purpose in life is a cultural strength and an advantage among blacks in achieving sobriety.

Background And Aims: Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), a severe form of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), is characterized by inflammation and fibrosis in the liver, often progressing to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Despite its rising prevalence and significant disease burden, effective pharmacological treatments have been limited to lifestyle modifications and surgical interventions. Purpose: The purpose of this review study is to investigate the effect of curcumin on the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) signaling pathway in various diseases. Curcumin, the main compound found in turmeric, has attracted a lot of attention for its diverse pharmacological properties. These properties have increased the therapeutic potential of curcumin in chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, kidney disease, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Nuclear receptors (NRs) are ligand-activated transcription factors that regulate gene expression in response to physiological signals, such as hormones and other chemical messengers. These receptors either activate or repress the transcription of target genes, which in turn promotes or suppresses physiological processes governing growth, differentiation, and homeostasis. NRs bind to specific DNA sequences and, in response to ligand binding, either promote or hinder the assembly of the transcriptional machinery, thereby influencing gene expression at the transcriptional level.

Alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) is characterized by the accumulation of hepatic lipid and has no effective treatment yet. Fructus Corni is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, and its extractions have demonstrated hepatoprotective properties. We hypothesize that the polysaccharides in Fructus Corni might have therapeutic effects on AFLD.
