Objective: To investigate the outcomes of intratympanic (IT) gentamicin sulfate injection to treat intractable Ménière's disease (MD) using evidence-based methods.
Data Source: Data were retrieved from a MEDLINE search (January 1995 through January 2011).
Study Selection: Selected were English-language articles presenting outcomes of IT gentamicin injection to treat MD that had a prospective study design and an evidence level of II or higher.
Data Extraction: The database was searched using Boolean combinations of the keywords intratympanic, gentamicin, and Ménière's disease.
Data Synthesis: Dichotomous outcomes (success rate and total deafness) were expressed using a Mantel-Haenszel fixed-effects model. Pretreatment and posttreatment pure-tone audiometry results, and word discrimination scores were summarized using data synthesis techniques.
Conclusion: A critical literature appraisal and meta-analysis shows that IT gentamicin injection can control vertigo in patients with MD who have limited hearing injury. The quality of research in this field has improved remarkably over the years. However, a large-scale randomized controlled trial is warranted to confirm the predictive factors for the effectiveness of IT gentamicin injection in treating MD.

Background: This study aimed to elucidate the safety and intra-articular elution profiles of vancomycin and gentamicin bone cement in patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA), with a focus on serum safety thresholds and therapeutic efficacy.
Methods: Consecutive patients who underwent unilateral primary TKA were prospectively enrolled. The implants were fixed using gentamicin-impregnated bone cement, and after arthrotomy closure, 1000 mg of vancomycin suspended in 25 mL of normal saline was directly injected into the joint.

The living human inner ear is challenging to study because it is encased within dense otic capsule bone that limits access to biological tissue. Traditional temporal bone histopathology methods rely on lengthy, expensive decalcification protocols that take 9-10 months and reduce the types of tissue analysis possible due to RNA degradation. There is a critical need to develop methods to access fresh human inner ear tissue to better understand otologic diseases, such as Ménière's disease, at the cellular and molecular level.

Severe bacterial infections (SBIs) are a leading cause of neonatal deaths in low- and middle-income countries. World Health Organization's (WHO's) guideline for outpatient management of danger signs indicating possible serious bacterial infections (PSBI) when referral is not possible was adopted by three pilot district councils in Mbeya Region, in Tanzania (Busekelo, Kyela and Mbarali Districts) in 2018 (the PSBI project). This study documented changes in practice during the PSBI project, and lessons learned.
