Purpose: To review recent Auger emitter research with an emphasis on a review of findings on targeting and accumulation of Auger emitters in tumor cells.
Conclusion: Significant progress can be reported for targeting methods and improvements in methods to accumulate Auger emitters in the target cells, as well as advances in dose calculations. These studies further our understanding of how Auger emitters induce cell death at a cellular and molecular level, supporting the targeted radiomedical applications of Auger emitters.

Thallium-201 is an Auger electron-emitting radionuclide with significant potential for targeted molecular radiotherapy of cancer. It stands out among other Auger electron emitters by releasing approximately 37 Auger and Coster-Kronig electrons per decay, which is one of the highest numbers in its category. It has also a convenient half-life of 73 h, a stable daughter product, established production methods, and demonstrated high radiotoxicity.

Accurate diagnosis and effective antiviral strategies are critical to combat acute infection and to avoid damage to the host. Due to their restricted radiation range and energy, Auger electron emitters have shown potential as a RNA-destructing radionuclide therapy in oncology and infection. Focusing on the process of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2)-mediated endocytosis, Technetium-99m-labeled DX600 (Tc-DX600) was synthesized as an Auger electron vector to specifically bind to surface-expressed ACE2 proteins on 293T-hACE2 cells (293T cells stably expressing human ACE2), and Technetium-99m-loaded microvesicles (Tc-MVs) served as an antiviral tracer and effector in pseudovirus infection.

Ternary ZnSeTe quantum dots (QDs) are regarded as the most promising Cd-free blue emitters, while their fundamental optical properties such as hot carrier (HC) cooling process and multiphoton absorption (MPA) remain unclear, which will hinder their potential application. In this work, we compare the HC cooling processes of ZnSeTe/ZnSeS and ZnSeTe/ZnSeS/ZnS QDs and find that the HC cooling times of ZnSeTe/ZnSeS/ZnS QDs are insensitive to excitation intensity as a result of the suppressed hot-phonon bottleneck and Auger effect. Importantly, we have determined the two- to five-photon absorption cross sections of two kinds of QDs, highlighting the advantages of ZnS shells in enhancing MPA cross sections of ZnSeTe-based QDs.
