The chemical properties of a 1,8-didehydronaphthalene derivative, the 4,5-didehydroisoquinolinium cation, were examined in the gas phase in a dual-cell Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometer. This is an interesting biradical because it has two radical sites in close proximity, yet their coupling is very weak. In fact, the biradical is calculated to have approximately degenerate singlet and triplet states. This biradical was found to exclusively undergo radical reactions, as opposed to other related biradicals with nearby radical sites. The first bond formation occurs at the radical site in the 4-position, followed by that in the 5-position. The proximity of the radical sites leads to reactions that have not been observed for related mono- or biradicals. Interestingly, some ortho-benzynes have been found to yield similar products. Since ortho-benzynes do not react via radical mechanisms, these products must be especially favorable thermodynamically.

The delocalization length of charge carriers in organic semiconductors influences their mobility and is an important factor in the design of functional materials. Here, we have studied the radical anions of a series of linear and cyclic butadiyne-linked porphyrin oligomers using CW-EPR, H Mims ENDOR and NIR/MIR spectroelectrochemistry together with DFT calculations and multiscale molecular modeling. Low-temperature hyperfine EPR spectroscopy and optical data show that polarons are delocalized nonuniformly over about four porphyrins with most of the spin density on just two units even in the cyclic structures, in which all porphyrin sites are identical.

Designing artificial enzymes for in vivo catalysis presents a great challenge due to biomacromolecule contamination, poor biodistribution, and insufficient substrate interaction. Herein, we developed single-chain polymeric nanoparticles with Cu/N-heterocyclic carbene active sites (SCNP-Cu) to function as peroxidase mimics for in vivo catalysis and chemo-dynamic therapy (CDT). Compared with the enzyme mimics based on unfolded linear polymer scaffold and multichain cross-linked scaffold, SCNP-Cu exhibits improved tumor accumulation and CDT efficiency both in vitro and in vivo.

As one of nature's most fundamental blueprints and due to its critical role in life processes, DNA has naturally become the cornerstone of numerous research efforts. One particularly intriguing area of study is understanding how small molecules interact with nucleic acids. In this study, we investigated the interaction between the plant-derived indole alkaloid Raubasine (Ajmalicine; AJM) and Salmon Testes (ST) DNA using biophysical and computational techniques.

Machine learning (ML) is expected to bring new insights into the impact of organic structures on the reaction mechanisms in reactive oxygen species oxidation. However, understanding the underlying chemical mechanisms still faces challenges due to the limited interpretability of the ML models. In this study, interpretable ML models were established to predict the second-order rate constants between hydroxyl radicals (OH) and organics ().
