The factors that modulate the inflammatory response in atherosclerosis are not well defined. In this issue of Immunity, Asare et al. examine the impact of a cis-regulatory element (CRE) that controls expression of HDAC9 and find that HDAC9-mediated deacetylation of NLRP3 might be the mechanism by which genetic variants in this conserved CRE influence the inflammation associated with human atherosclerosis.

This commentary on Liu et al. (2025 JIPB) discusses the groundbreaking discovery that hydrogen sulfide (HS) modulates guard cell function by inhibiting inward-rectifying potassium channels through protein persulfidation, providing novel insights into the molecular mechanisms governing stomatal regulation and opening new avenues for enhancing plant stress resilience.

Fear conditioning: Insights into learning, memory and extinction and its relevance to clinical disorders.

Electronic address:

Fear, whether innate or learned, is an essential emotion required for survival. The learning, and subsequent memory, of fearful events enhances our ability to recognise and respond to threats, aiding adaptation to new, ever-changing environments. Considerable research has leveraged associative learning protocols such as contextual or auditory forms of fear conditioning in rodents, to understand fear learning, memory consolidation and extinction phases of memory.

Pelvic floor dysfunction is still an undervalued, underreported, and undertreated condition among female athletes. Despite high prevalence rates and growing interest within the scientific community, significant gaps persist in the application of evidence-based practices in sports medicine. This commentary, inspired by real questions encountered in the authors' work, is presented in a Q&A format to simulate a realistic conversation.
