Progesterone suppresses rhinovirus-induced airway inflammation by inhibiting neutrophil infiltration and extracellular traps formation.

Int Immunopharmacol

January 2025

NHC Key Laboratory of Control of Tropical Diseases, School of Tropical Medicine & The Second Affiliated Hospital, Hainan Medical University, Haikou, Hainan 571199, China. Electronic address:

Background: The process of NETosis is observed in a range of inflammatory conditions. Progesterone (P4) has been shown to alleviate inflammation caused by viral infections such as influenza and SARS-CoV-2. However, the precise molecular mechanisms responsible for this effect are not yet fully understood.

This study assessed the effectiveness of the local use of green propolis-loaded lipid nanoparticles (GPlnp) as an adjuvant therapy to scaling and root planing (SRP) to manage experimental periodontitis (EP) in ovariectomized rats treated with zoledronate. Ten weeks before the experiment, 48 female rats were ovariectomized. On day 0, a ligature was installed in the lower first molar to induce EP.

Article Synopsis
  • Inflammation is essential for protecting the body but can also damage it; neutrophils play a key role in this process by releasing proteins and forming structures called NETs.
  • The study investigated the role of Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK) in regulating the NLRP3 inflammasome in neutrophils, as this aspect had not been previously explored.
  • Findings revealed that when BTK was absent or inhibited, there was an increase in the inflammatory responses in neutrophils, suggesting that BTK negatively regulates NLRP3 activation, which could have implications for using BTK inhibitors in treatment.

Objective: To investigate the therapeutic mechanism of Skan total flavonoids (PHSTF) for rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Methods: Twenty-five male SD rats were randomly divided into normal control group, RA model group, PHSTF treatment (45 and 90 mg/kg) groups, and Tripterygium glycosides (TPG) tablet (10 mg/kg) group (=5). Except for those in the normal control group, all the rats were subjected to collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) modeling using a secondary immunization method, after which PHSTF and TPG were administered via gavage once daily for 4 weeks.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to uncover unique protein markers associated with ocular graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) by analyzing corneal samples from GVHD model mice and control mice four weeks post-bone marrow transplantation.
  • - Researchers conducted proteomic analysis and identified key protein pathways upregulated in GVHD, including necroptosis, MAPK, and neutrophil extracellular trap pathways, along with newly upregulated molecules involved in these processes.
  • - The findings could provide insights into the mechanisms behind ocular GVHD and pave the way for developing new therapies targeting corneal issues in affected patients.
