The growing epidemic of juvenile obesity has prompted pediatricians to investigate obesity-related conditions in obese teenagers. We report a clinical case of severe hepatic fibrosis in an adolescent with severe and recent obesity. Because of elevated serum aminotransferase levels, abnormal hepatic ultrasonography and insulin resistance (impaired glucose tolerance), we suspected nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

[Ringer solution: osmolarity and composition revisited].

The composition of Ringer solution, a crystalloid fluid that is often used in anaesthesia and intensive care, varies depending on the manufacturer. The knowledge of the actual content in electrolytes and of the characteristics of this fluid is necessary before it is used. We call attention to a certain Ringer solution (Ringer Maco Pharma, Maco Pharma), for which the manufacturer's information about the tonicity and the osmolarity was incorrect.

Increase in knowledge about reactive oxygen species action mechanisms and oxidative stress effects in living organisms led to intensive seeking for new, more effective substances, which prevent extreme development of oxidative stress or are able to decrease its negative influence, damaging cell structures and many cell functions. These substances are called antioxidants, scavengers, trappers or quenchers. In nineties, melatonin became the centre of the interest in the filed of investigation of antioxidative properties of different chemical substances.
