Purulent lymphadenitis is rare in newborn and is associated with prematurity and invasive procedure. Neonatal staphylococcal infections due to skin interruption during intramuscular vitamin K administration and national metabolic screening programme (heel prick or Guthrie card test) have been already previously described. This is a report of a premature infant who developed an inguinal adenitis as a result of late complications from heel pricks. The diagnosis was made on clinical grounds and confirmed by ultrasound scans. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated. Bacteremia did not occur and the lymphadenitis had a complete resolution with antimicrobial therapy. The heel prick is a well-established procedure in neonatal practice, nevertheless it is not risk-free. The attention to signs of infections is important to avoid complications such as purulent lymphadenitis, abscess formation and septicemia. Best practice prevention and control in minimising the risk of infections are the most important intervention to prevent this complication.

Unlabelled: Newborn screening (NBS) represents an important public health measure for the early detection of specified disorders; such screening can prevent disability and death, not only from metabolic disorders but also from endocrine, hematologic, immune, and cardiac disorders. Screening for critical congenital conditions affecting newborns' health is a great challenge, especially in developing countries such as Morocco, where NBS program infrastructure is lacking. In addition, the consanguinity rate is high in Morocco.

Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of iodine excess in pregnant mothers on thyroid function, growth and neurodevelopment in the neonates when assessed at 12 weeks of age.
Methodology: This prospective study enrolled term neonates with birth weight >2500 gm of mothers having urine iodine concentration (UIC) ≥500 µg/L documented in the third trimester of the peripartum period. Neonatal TSH was collected by heel prick on dried blood spots within 24-72 hours of age and measured by time-resolved fluroimmunoassay.

Background: The newborn can learn the voices of its mother and father during intrauterine life, and the reencounter with these familiar voices after birth has a relaxing and calming effect on the baby.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of mother's voice and father's voice that newborns listened to during the heel blood collection procedure on pain level and physiological parameters.
Methods: The study was a randomized controlled trial.

Neonatal exposure to noxious stimuli such as repeated heel lances can cause behavior changes. In the NICU sucrose given prior to procedures attenuates the immediate behavioral response to noxious stimuli but may not ameliorate the long-term consequences, and treatment with 24 % sucrose can brain structure and behavior in adult rodents. We used a rat model to determine whether paw pricks during the neonatal period alter social interaction and/or paw withdrawal thresholds (PWT) in adolescence, and if 7 % sucrose mitigates these effects.
