Cavopulmonary connections are surgical procedures used to treat a variety of complex congenital cardiac defects. Virtual pre-operative planning based on in silico patient-specific modelling might become a powerful tool in the surgical decision-making process. For this purpose, three-dimensional models can be easily developed from medical imaging data to investigate individual haemodynamics. However, the definition of patient-specific boundary conditions is still a crucial issue. The present study describes an approach to evaluate the vascular impedance of the right and left lungs on the basis of pre-operative clinical data and numerical simulations. Computational fluid dynamics techniques are applied to a patient with a bidirectional cavopulmonary anastomosis, who later underwent a total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC). Multi-scale models describing the surgical region and the lungs are adopted, while the flow rates measured in the venae cavae are used at the model inlets. Pre-operative and post-operative conditions are investigated; namely, TCPC haemodynamics, which are predicted using patient-specific pre-operative boundary conditions, indicates that the pre-operative balanced lung resistances are not compatible with the TCPC measured flows, suggesting that the pulmonary vascular impedances changed individually after the surgery. These modifications might be the consequence of adaptation to the altered pulmonary blood flows.

The sensory/discriminative domain of pain is often given more consideration than the cognitive and affective influences that ultimately make pain what it is: a highly subjective experience that is based on an individual's life history and experiences. While many investigations of the underlying mechanisms of pain have focused on solely noxious stimuli, few have compared somatosensory stimuli that cross the boundary from innocuous to noxious. Of those that have, there is little consensus on the similarities and differences in neural signaling across these sensory domains.

As the size of the chemical industry increases, chemical accidents continue to occur as the handling volume of chemicals also increases. Currently, in the case of a chemical accident, the prediction of the scope of influence mainly analyzes the scope of the impact on a single substance in the accident and does not consider the scope of the decomposition and reaction products. Nitric acid, one of the many chemical accidents, produces nitrogen dioxide, which is harmful when decomposed.

Background: Experimental knee implant wear testing according to ISO 14243 is a standard procedure, but it inherently possesses limitations for preclinical evaluations due to extended testing periods and costly infrastructure. In an effort to overcome these limitations, we hereby develop and experimentally validate a finite-element (FE)-based algorithm, including a novel cross-shear and contact pressure dependent wear and creep model, and apply it towards understanding the sensitivity of wear outcomes to the applied boundary conditions.
Methods: Specifically, we investigated the application of in vivo data for level walking from the publicly available "Stan" data set, which contains single representative tibiofemoral loads and kinematics derived from in vivo measurements of six subjects, and compared wear outcomes against those obtained using the ISO standard boundary conditions.

Geophysical techniques have become increasingly crucial for characterizing landfills, offering noninvasive methods for subsurface exploration and contamination assessment. In this study, an integrated geophysical approach-utilizing magnetic, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), and transient electromagnetic (TEM) surveys-was employed to characterize the Weidenpesch landfill in Cologne, Germany and assess potential groundwater contamination. The results from these methods were consistent, effectively delineating the landfill boundaries and identifying possible contamination.

The Qin and Western Han dynasties (221 BCE to 24 CE) represent an era of societal prosperity in China. However, due to a lack of high-resolution paleoclimate records it is still unclear whether the agricultural boost documented for this period was associated with more favorable climatic conditions. Here, multiparameter analysis of annually resolved tree-ring records and process-based physiological modeling provide evidence of stable and consistently humid climatic conditions during 270 to 77 BCE in northern China.
