Purpose: To visualize and assess the surface-level pores of the lamina cribrosa in patients with glaucoma by using a prototype adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO) system.

Methods: The numbers of laminar pores were compared between color disc photography, scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO) without AO, and AOSLO. The pore area and elongation index were examined for correlation with ocular parameters such as the mean deviation, disc area, cup/disc ratio, disc ovality index, intraocular pressure (IOP), and axial length in the AOSLO images.

Results: The 40 eyes (20 normal and 20 glaucomatous) of 40 subjects were enrolled. The AOSLO provided laminar pore images of better quality than other imaging methods, and the number of visible pores was significantly greater in the AOSLO images than in the other imaging methods (the color disc photographs [P < 0.001] and SLO without AO images [P < 0.001]) when compared for 26 subjects. When compared for 40 subjects using AOSLO, the pore area was significantly larger in glaucomatous subjects than in normal subjects (P = 0.031), but elongation index was not. The pore area correlated significantly with the axial length (P = 0.008) in normal subjects, with the untreated IOPs (P = 0.002) in the glaucomatous subjects, and with the axial length (P = 0.001) and cup/disc ratio (P = 0.012) in the total subjects. Via multiple regression analysis, significant correlations with pore area were found for axial length in the normal (β = 0.684, P = 0.001) and total subjects (β = 0.496, P < 0.001) and untreated IOP in the glaucomatous (β = 0.506, P = 0.023) and total subjects (β = 0.331, P = 0.014).

Conclusions: AOSLO is a useful imaging technology for assessing laminar pore morphology. The laminar pore area may be affected by axial length and IOP.

Impact of climate change that stems from gaseous emissions require sustainable materials to eliminate sulfur.  This study involves the modification of humic acid with magnetite nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄ NPs) by a microwave-assisted synthesis of an absorbent with reasonable pore volume and diameter for elimination of thiophenic compounds from fuel. The magnetic nano adsorbent designated Fe3O4@HA was characterized using advanced spectroscopic techniques, while their structure and morphology were analyzed through DLS, XPS, XRD, FT-IR, TGA, FESEM-EDX, VSM, and BET-N2 techniques.

This study examines the viability of using graphitic-Carbon Nitride (g-CN) nanomaterial as shale stabilizer drilling fluid additive having applications in the oil and gas wells drilling. Shale stability is important especially when drilling horizontal and extended reach wells with water-based muds (WBM) to tap unconventional reservoirs namely shale oil and shale gas. For this study, the g-CN nanomaterial was produced by melamine pyrolysis, and characterized by X-Ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy techniques.

Acid fracturing fluids can effectively improve the microporous structure of coal, thereby enhancing the permeability of coal seam and the efficiency of gas drainage. To explore the effects of acid fracturing fluids on the pore structure modification of coal samples from different coal ranks, hydrochloric acid-based acid fracturing fluids were prepared and used to soak four types of medium to high-rank coal in an experiment. High-pressure mercury intrusion and liquid nitrogen adsorption techniques results demonstrated that the acid fracturing fluid can effectively alter the pore structure of coal.

Plateau-dominated hard carbon with a high rate of performance is challenging to obtain, and the in-depth mechanism of pore structure on the diffusion of sodium ions remains unclear. In this study, a facile liquid-phase molecular reconstruction strategy is proposed to regulate the orientation of the β-cyclodextrin molecules and prepare spherical hard carbon with continuous and ordered pore channels. Through detailed characterization, this approach is confirmed to optimize the accumulation of Na in the dispersion region, thus improving the plateau kinetics and enhancing the utilization of closed pores.

Hydrogels are popular materials for desalination and can significantly reduce the vaporization enthalpy of water; however, there are few reports on hydrogels with a controllable multilevel structural design for water evaporation. Herein, a calcium alginate and traditional Chinese ink-based evaporator (CIE) are proposed and fabricated using directed freezing technology to construct radial channels, followed by freeze-drying and physical cross-linking. Because of the squeezing of ice crystals and the shaping effect of the PDMS template, the prepared evaporator exhibits a sea-urchin-shaped highly geometrical centrosymmetric structure with numerous multilevel pore channels, which promotes the rapid transport of water under different solar incidence angles as the sun rotates as well as overcomes the structural shrinkage of the hydrogel caused by insufficient water supply.
