Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the incidence and common types of concomitant malignancies and to define predictive factors of death in Korean patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM).

Methods: From January 1989 to May 2011, 162 patients were diagnosed with IIM at a university hospital in Korea. The medical records were retrospectively reviewed. The clinical findings of the patients were compared for malignancy, and the prognostic factors predicting death were analyzed.

Results: Malignancies were found in 17 patients (10.5 %), all of whom had a significantly lower frequency of interstitial lung disease (ILD) and an older age at onset. The main causes of death were ILD and malignancy. Older age at diagnosis, presence of malignancy, rapidly progressive ILD and minimal creatinine phosphokinase (CPK) elevation were independent risk factors for death.

Conclusions: Malignancy was one of the most serious risk factor for death in our patients with IIM. Early discovery of malignancy is important, and an extensive investigation for common malignancies in each region should be done at diagnosis and for a minimum of 2 years thereafter. As minimally elevated CPK levels in ILD patients may be associated with fatal ILD, an early evaluation and a more aggressive treatment of ILD should be considered in these patients.

Treatment of idiopathic granulomatous mastitis: a retrospective case series.

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare inflammatory disease of the breast. Various clinical management approaches have been described, but their efficacy and optimal sequential order remain uncertain. We describe the first Canadian cohort of patients with IGM, discuss treatment outcomes and outline a practical management approach.

Objectives: Objective of this work was to examine myomiR levels in plasma, skeletal muscle, and skeletal muscle cells of patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM), their interrelations with the disease-related clinical phenotypes and with the effects of the disease-modifying 6-month training-intervention.

Methods: Samples of vastus lateralis muscle (n = 12/13) and plasma (n = 20/21) were obtained from IIM patients and healthy controls, respectively. Muscle and plasma were obtained before and after a 6-month training-intervention in 7 patients.

Background: Autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) is a form of chronic pancreatitis that presents clinically with obstructive icterus, histologically with infiltration of pancreatic parenchyma by inflammatory cells leading to chronic inflammation with fibrosis, and therapeutically with good response to corticosteroid therapy. Clinically, it may resemble malignant disease, making diagnosis difficult and requiring a multidisciplinary team (gastroenterologist, endoscopist, radiologist, surgeon, pathologist). Two types of AIP are distinguished.

The Intricate Relationship Between Pulmonary Fibrosis and Thrombotic Pathology: A Narrative Review.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is associated with a significantly increased risk of thrombotic events and mortality. This review explores the complex bidirectional relationship between pulmonary fibrosis and thrombosis, discussing epidemiological evidence, pathogenetic mechanisms, and therapeutic implications, with a particular focus on the emerging role of extracellular vesicles (EVs) as crucial mediators linking fibrosis and coagulation. Coagulation factors directly promote fibrosis, while fibrosis itself activates thrombotic pathways.

A novel patient group with chronic pulmonary fibrosis is emerging post COVID-19. To identify patients at risk of developing post-COVID-19 lung fibrosis, we here aimed to identify systemic proteins that overlap with fibrotic markers identified in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and may predict COVID-19-induced lung fibrosis. Ninety-two proteins were measured in plasma samples from hospitalized patients with moderate and severe COVID-19 in Sweden, before the introduction of the vaccination program, as well as from healthy individuals.
