From humble beginnings, the University of Cape Town's Department of Anaesthesia has played a major role in the development of anaesthesia as a speciality, in South Africa and internationally. We highlight these contributions in clinical service, teaching and research, with particular emphasis on the department's leading role in the evolution of anaesthetic safety in adults and children: from the development of the treatment of malignant hyperthermia, to unique studies in mortality associated with anaesthesia, and modern contributions to improved drug safety. Innovations in anaesthetic techniques have contributed to significant surgical developments, including the first heart transplant. Furthermore, our research has contributed to major advances in obstetric and endocrine anaesthesia, and training in the department is recognised as being among the best in the world.

Objective: The objective of this review was to synthesize the available evidence on the experiences of African women who migrated to a developed country and encountered intimate partner violence (IPV).

Introduction: IPV is a significant public health issue, and migrant women living in developed countries are particularly vulnerable to IPV, experiencing disproportionately higher rates of IPV. Understanding the experiences of these women can inform health policy and decision-making in clinical practice to minimize IPV.

Synthesis of zeolite from rice husk ash and kaolinite clay for the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solution.

Heliyon

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, School of Physical Sciences, College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast, Ghana.

Zeolite was successfully synthesized using a mixture of kaolinite clay (which served as the alumina source) and rice husk ash (silica source). The aim of this work was to synthesize highly efficient zelolite to remove methyle blue dye from aqueous solution. The synthesized adsorbent was characterised using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and pH at the point of zero charge (pHpzc).

Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy for Nitrite Detection.

J Agric Food Chem

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, Cape Breton University, Sydney, Nova Scotia B1P 6L2, Canada.

Nitrite is an important chemical intermediate in the nitrogen cycle and is ubiquitously present in environmental and biological systems as a metabolite or additive in the agricultural and food industries. However, nitrite can also be toxic in excessive concentrations. As such, the development of quick, sensitive, and portable assays for its measurement is desirable.

Nutritional epidemiology aims to link dietary exposures to chronic disease, but the instruments for evaluating dietary intake are inaccurate. One way to identify unreliable data and the sources of errors is to compare estimated intakes with the total energy expenditure (TEE). In this study, we used the International Atomic Energy Agency Doubly Labeled Water Database to derive a predictive equation for TEE using 6,497 measures of TEE in individuals aged 4 to 96 years.
