Published: December 2012

Introduction: Empirical evidence has suggested an association between mood and color sensitivity. The purpose of this study is to report on the psychometric properties of a new postpartum depression rating scale while at the same time showing a correlation between depression severity and impaired color sensitivity.

Methods: Using a survey design of a sample of 17 postpartum patients, color sensitivity was assessed by the patient's response to a self-report depression scale item, "I notice that everything seems gray/cloudy/drab/lacking color".

Results: There was a statistically significant finding between color sensitivity and depression, r=.50, P<.05. Based on classical test theory, findings also supported the validity and reliability of the new scale.

Limitations: The limitation of the study was the small sample size, but it also suggests that the findings seem particularly robust in view of this.

Conclusions: This scale could be used in clinical practice to detect early signs of depression for prompt intervention. Referral should be made to mental health providers for follow-up to insure that the mother is not psychotic or so depressed that she cannot care for the baby. Color sensitivity impairment and depression severity has been replicated several times with different samples. It is worthwhile pursuing the pathophysiological basis for this.

MicroRNA122 (miR-122) is a microRNA that is highly expressed in hepatocytes and has been identified as a prospective therapeutic target and biomarker for liver injury. An expanding body of research has demonstrated that miR-122 is a critical regulator in both the initiation and progression of a wide range of liver diseases. Traditional methods for detecting miR-122 mainly include Northern blotting and qRT-PCR, but they are technically complex and cumbersome, requiring expensive instruments and high technical requirements.

Selection and Engineering of Novel Brighter Bioluminescent Reporter Gene and Color- Tuning Luciferase for pH-Sensing in Mammalian Cells.

Biosensors (Basel)

January 2025

Laboratory of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Bioluminescent Systems Technology, Department of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, Federal University of Sao Carlos (UFSCAR), Rodovia João Leme dos Santos, km 110, Sorocaba 18052-780, SP, Brazil.

Firefly luciferases have been extensively used for bioanalytical applications, including their use as bioluminescent reporters, biosensors, and for bioimaging biological and pathological processes. Due to their intrinsic pH- sensitivity, in recent years we have demonstrated that firefly luciferases can also be harnessed as color- tuning sensors of intracellular pH. However, it is known that mammalian cells require temperatures higher than 36 °C, which red-shift the bioluminescence spectra of most firefly luciferases, decreasing their activities and the resolution of ratiometric pH analysis.

Biohybrid Systems Research Center (BSRC), Inha University, 100 Inha-ro, Michuhol-gu, Incheon 22212, Republic of Korea.

Biosensors, which combine physical transducers with biorecognition elements, have seen significant advancement due to the heightened interest in rapid diagnostic technologies across a number of fields, including medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and food safety. In particular, polydiacetylene (PDA) is gaining attention as an ideal material for label-free colorimetric biosensor development due to its unique color-changing properties in response to external stimuli. PDA forms through the self-assembly of diacetylene monomers, with color change occurring as its conjugated backbone twists in response to stimuli such as temperature, pH, and chemical interactions.

Iron/phosphorus co-doped carbon nanozyme for colorimetric sensing of organophosphorus pesticides in food.

In this work, a peroxidase-like (POD-like) nanozyme of Fe/P-NC was synthesized by doping phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) to manipulate iron (Fe) activity centers, which showed catalytic activity and kinetics comparable to those of natural HRP. Based on the efficient POD-like activity of the Fe/P-NC nanozyme and cascaded catalytic reactions with acetylcholinesterase (AChE), we constructed a colorimetric, affordable and sensitive sensing platform to detect organophosphorus pesticides (OPs). In the presence of AChE, the POD-like activity of the prepared Fe/P-NC was suppressed, which weakened the Fe/P-NC-catalyzed oxidation of TMB.
