Thirty eight vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) were isolated in one year surveillance study for hospital infection control programme in a state hospital in Ankara, Turkey. All isolates were identified as Enterococcus faecium by VITEK2 system (bioMerieux, France). Vancomycin and teicoplanin resistant 30 strains were defined as vanA phenotype while vancomycin-resistant teicoplanin-susceptible eight strains were defined as vanB phenotype. vanA genes were found in 30 strains while vanB genes were found in five strains by using PCR method. Those five strains were the first vanB positive E.faecium strains in our country. VRE strains revealed six different band patterns by PFGE, while six isolates could not be classified. All isolates with vanB type resistance were found in the same cluster. Source of vanB positive strains was considered as the hemodialysis unit. When the previous national reports related to vancomycin-resistant enterococci were considered, this was the first report of vanB positive E.faecium isolates in our country. This emphasized that both the diversity of VRE and the isolation rate was increasing. In order to eliminate the spread of VRE, effective surveillance studies should be performed and protective measures should be established promptly.

Aims: The present study aimed to detect the frequency of vancomycin resistance and virulence genes' profiles of multi-drug-resistant (MDR) enterococcal isolates from different sources and to investigate the sequence heterogeneity between the esp genes of MDR and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis isolates from chicken and human sources.
Methods And Results: Conventional phenotypic methods identified 91 isolates (60.7%) as Enterococcus species, and these isolates were retrieved from dairy (37/52), chicken (35/54), and human (19/44) origins.

The emergence of pandrug-resistant (PDR) and extensive drug-resistant (XDR) methicillin-resistant and vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA and VRSA) isolates from bovine milk samples along with biofilm formation ability and harboring various virulence genes complicates the treatment of bovine mastitis and highlights the serious threat to public health. This study investigated for the first time the frequency, antimicrobial resistance profiles, biofilm-forming ability, virulence factors, spa and staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) types of MRSA and VRSA isolated from clinical and subclinical bovine mastitis in Egypt. A total of 808 milk samples were collected from each quarter of 202 dairy animals, including 31 buffaloes and 171 cattle.

From 1 January to 31 December 2023, fifty-six institutions across Australia participated in the Australian Enterococcal Surveillance Outcome Program (AESOP). The aim of AESOP 2023 was to determine the proportion of enterococcal bacteraemia isolates in Australia that were antimicrobial resistant, and to determine the molecular epidemiology. Of the 1,599 unique episodes of enterococcal bacteraemia investigated, 92.

Background , once benign intestinal flora, has transformed into formidable nosocomial pathogens as a result of the accelerated emergence of antibiotic resistance represents a major global health challenge, particularly within hospital settings. has grown more prevalent in nosocomial infections, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), surgical site infections (SSIs) and bacteremia. The potential emergence of vancomycin-resistant (VRE) strains further complicates treatment choices for multi-drug resistant (MDR) infections.

Objectives: The study institute was challenged with an outbreak of different vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm), including vanA- and/or vanB-containing isolates. Remarkably, screening overnight enriched specimens using a vanA and vanB real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) gave positive results for vanB with very low cycle threshold values, whereas VREfm-specific enrichment cultures remained negative. This paper describes the analysis of the diagnostic results leading to adaptation of the diagnostic algorithm.
