Published: June 2012

Malonic anhydrides decompose at or below room temperature, to form a ketene and carbon dioxide. Rate constants for the thermal decomposition of malonic, methylmalonic, and dimethylmalonic anhydrides were measured by NMR spectroscopy at various temperatures, and activation parameters were evaluated from the temperature dependence of the rate constants. Methylmalonic anhydride is the fastest, with the lowest ΔH(‡), and dimethylmalonic anhydride is the slowest. The nonlinear dependence on the number of methyl groups is discussed in terms of a concerted [2(s) + (2(s) + 2(s))] or [2(s) + 2(a)] cycloreversion that proceeds via a twisted transition-state structure, supported by computations.

Cross-Linkable Fullerene Electron Transport Layer with Internal Encapsulation Capability for Efficient and Stable Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells.

A stable and compact fullerene electron transport layer (ETL) is crucial for high-performance inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, traditional fullerene-based ETLs like C and PCBM are prone to aggregate under operational conditions, a challenge recently recognized by academic and industrial researchers. Here, we designed and synthesized a novel cross-linkable fullerene molecule, bis((3-methyloxetan-3-yl)methyl) malonate-C monoadduct (BCM), for use as an ETL in PSCs.

The clinical success of [Ra]RaCl (Xofigo®) for the palliative treatment of bone metastases in patients with prostate cancer has highlighted the therapeutic potential of α-particle emission. Expanding the applicability of radium-223 in Targeted Alpha Therapy of non-osseous tumors is followed up with significant interest, as it holds the potential to unveil novel treatment options in the comprehensive management of cancer. Moreover, the use of barium radionuclides, like barium-131 and -135m, is still unfamiliar in nuclear medicine applications, although they can be considered as radium-223 surrogates for imaging purposes.

Fullerene C and its malonate derivatives, produced the Bingel-Hirsch reaction, have displayed promising properties against various diseases. These molecules have great therapeutic potential, but their broad use has been limited due to poor aqueous solubility and toxicity caused by accumulation. In this study, we synthesized new malonates and malonamides attached to first- and second-generation polyester dendrons using click chemistry (CuAAC).

Machine learning applied to large compendia of transcriptomic data has enabled the decomposition of bacterial transcriptomes to identify independently modulated sets of genes, such iModulons represent specific cellular functions. The identification of iModulons enables accurate identification of genes necessary and sufficient for cross-species transfer of cellular functions. We demonstrate cross-species transfer of: 1) the biotransformation of vanillate to protocatechuate, 2) a malonate catabolic pathway, 3) a catabolic pathway for 2,3-butanediol, and 4) an antimicrobial resistance to ampicillin found in multiple Pseudomonas species to Escherichia coli.

Nanoparticles of NiLaFeO ferrite spinel incorporated in a SiO matrix were synthesized via a sol-gel method, followed by annealing at 200, 500, and 800 °C. The resulting materials were characterized via XRD, AFM, and BET techniques and evaluated for photocatalytic activity. The XRD diffractograms validate the formation of a single-phase cubic spinel structure at all temperatures, without any evidence of secondary peaks.
