Lamb wave testing for structural health monitoring (SHM) often relies on analysis of wavefields recorded through scanning laser Doppler vibrometers (SLDVs) or ultrasonic scanners. Damage detection and characterization with these techniques requires isolation of defect-induced reflections in the wavefield from the injected wave packet and from scattering events associated with structural features such as boundaries, rivets, joints, etc. This is a challenging task when dealing with complex structures and multimodal, dispersive propagation regimes, whereby various wave contributions in both the time/space and the frequency/wavenumber domain overlap. A new mathematical tool named warped curvelet frames (WCFs) is proposed to effectively decompose the recorded wavefields. The presented technique results from the combination of two operators, i.e., the curvelet transform (CT) and the warped frequency transform (WFT). The CT provides an optimally sparse representation of nondispersive wave propagators. Combining the CT with the WFT allows for a flexible analysis of multimodal wave propagation in dispersive media. Exploiting the spatial and temporal localization of curvelets, as well as the spectro-temporal adaptation of the analysis frame to the characteristics of each propagating mode, provided by frequency warping, a convenient decomposition of guided waves is achieved and relevant contributions can be effectively isolated. The proposed approach is validated through dedicated simulations and further tested experimentally to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method in separating guided wave modes corresponding to acoustic events in close spatial proximity.

Ventricular Depolarization Abnormalities and Their Role in Cardiac Risk Stratification - A Narrative Review.

Rev Cardiovasc Med

Department of Cardiovasculair Sciences, KU Leuven, 3000 Leuven, Belgium.

Ventricular depolarization refers to the electrical activation and subsequent contraction of the ventricles, visible as the QRS complex on a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG). A well-organized and efficient depolarization is critical for cardiac function. Abnormalities in ventricular depolarization may indicate various pathologies and can be present in all leads if the condition is general, or in a subgroup of anatomically contiguous leads if the condition is limited to the corresponding anatomic location of the heart.

Tiny Machine Learning Implementation for Guided Wave-Based Damage Localization.

Sensors (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Siegen, Paul-Bonatz-Straße 9-11, 57076 Siegen, Germany.

This work leverages ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) to detect and localize damage in structures using lightweight Artificial Intelligence (AI) models. It investigates the use of machine learning (ML) to train the effects of the damage on UGWs to the model. To reduce the number of trainable parameters, a physical signal processing approach is applied to the raw data before passing the data to the model.

This paper introduces a novel method for measuring the dielectric permittivity of materials within the microwave and millimeter wave frequency ranges. The proposed approach, classified as a guided wave transmission system, employs a periodic transmission line structure characterized by mirror/glide symmetry. The dielectric permittivity is deduced by measuring the transmission properties of such structure when presence of the dielectric material breaks the inherent symmetry of the structure and consequently introduce a stopband in propagation characteristic.

Endoscopic Management of Benign Pancreaticobiliary Disorders.

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Center for Digestive Health, Virginia Mason, Franciscan Health, Seattle, WA 98101, USA.

Endoscopic management of benign pancreaticobiliary disorders encompasses a range of procedures designed to address complications in gallstone disease, choledocholithiasis, and pancreatic disorders. Acute cholecystitis is typically treated with cholecystectomy or percutaneous drainage (PT-GBD), but for high-risk or future surgical candidates, alternative decompression methods, such as endoscopic transpapillary gallbladder drainage (ETP-GBD), and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided gallbladder drainage (EUS-GBD), are effective. PT-GBD is associated with significant discomfort as well as variable adverse event rates.

Interface Acoustic Waves in 128° YX-LiNbO/SU-8/Overcoat Structures.

The propagation of interface acoustic waves (IAWs) in 128° YX-LiNbO/SU-8/overcoat structures was theoretically studied and experimentally investigated for different types of overcoat materials and thicknesses of the SU-8 adhesive layer. Three-dimensional finite element method analysis was performed using Comsol Multiphysics software to design an optimized multilayer configuration able to achieve an efficient guiding effect of the IAW at the LiNbO/overcoat interface. Numerical analysis results showed the following: (i) an overcoat faster than the piezoelectric half-space ensures that the wave propagation is confined mainly close to the surface of the LiNbO, although with minimal scattering in the overcoat; (ii) the presence of the SU-8, in addition to performing the essential function of an adhesive layer, can also promote the trapping of the acoustic energy toward the surface of the piezoelectric substrate; and (iii) the electromechanical coupling efficiency of the IAW is very close to that of the surface acoustic wave (SAW) along the bare LiNbO half-space.
