[Statin therapy--for whom?].

Duodecim

HYKS, medisiininen tulosyksikkö.

Published: August 2012

For patients with cardiovascular disease, statins belong to routine medical treatment irrespective of blood lipid levels. In primary prevention also, statins have been found to prevent cardiovascular diseases, associated deaths and decrease overall mortality. In previously healthy persons the use of statins should be based on the assessment of total risk--mere cholesterol level does not usually constitute an indication for treatment. The use of statins may lead to adverse effects, the major one being myopathy, for which an elevated risk is associated with increasing statin dosages.

Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol

January 2025

Department of Internal Medicine, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX. Electronic address:

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major concern for public health. Fatty liver disease, related to alcohol misuse or metabolic syndrome, has become the leading cause of chronic liver disease and HCC. The strong association between type 2 diabetes mellitus and HCC can be partly attributed to the development of metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).

Statin therapy in primary and secondary cardiovascular disease prevention.

Curr Atheroscler Rep

December 2024

Hellenic Endocrine Network, 6, Ermou St, Athens, Greece.

Purpose Of Review: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is one of the most common causes of death globally and the leading one in the US. Elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is one of the main modifiable disease risk factors and statin therapies have been extensively studied in that regard. The present work presents the clinical trials derived evidence supporting the use of statins in primary and secondary cardiovascular disease prevention.

Aim: Few studies have evaluated the midterm prognosis of patients with intermittent claudication who underwent endovascular therapy (EVT) for femoropopliteal lesions. Therefore, we aimed to assess 2-year mortality and prognostic factors in these patients.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 947 patients who underwent EVT for intermittent claudication between January 2018 and December 2021 at eight Japanese cardiovascular centers.

Advances in the pharmacological management of hyperlipidemia through the use of combination therapies.

Expert Opin Pharmacother

December 2024

Department of Metabolic Medicine/Chemical Pathology Guy's, St Thomas' Hospitals, London, UK.

Introduction: Lipid-lowering therapies are well established for the treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Historically monotherapy studies have been performed, but the introduction of statins has led to these drugs being recognized as baseline therapies and to the investigation of combination therapy of both older and newer medications with them.

Areas Covered: Surrogate marker studies have shown additive effects on LDL-C, triglycerides and HDL-C of combination therapies with statins and these have extended to lipoprotein (a).

Dual Antiplatelet Treatment up to 72 Hours After Ischemic Stroke Stratified by Risk Profile: A Post Hoc Analysis.

Stroke

January 2025

Department of Neurology, Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University, China (Y.Z., X.W., Y.G., W.C., H.Y., T.W., Y.Y., Q.Z., M.W., J.J., C.W., Yongjun Wang, Yilong Wang, Y.P.).

Background: Risk profile of recurrence may influence the effect of antiplatelet therapy. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of clopidogrel-aspirin initiated within 72 hours after symptom onset for acute mild stroke or high-risk transient ischemic attack stratified by risk profile.

Methods: This is a secondary post hoc analysis of the INSPIRES (Intensive Statin and Antiplatelet Therapy for Acute High-risk Intracranial or Extracranial Atherosclerosis) randomized clinical trial that enrolled patients 35 to 80 years old with acute mild ischemic stroke or high-risk transient ischemic attack between 2018 and 2022.
