Successful assessing intestinal lumen content with ultrasound signals might lay a strong basis for the development of the artificial anal sphincter. In the present study, we utilized a modified MLU02-212 ultrasonic gas bubble detector to test the distal part of proximal colon in each rabbit, for the group of twenty healthy New Zealand rabbits. Voltage signals of solid, liquid, gas and empty content of the lumen were collected and compared. The results indicated that there were significant differences among the voltage signals in the 4 conditions (P = 0.000), respectively. Multiple comparison showed significant differences existed in any pair of the four conditions (P = 0.000). Three signal non-overlapping regions existed in these 4 conditions. Thus it seemed that ultrasound could be utilized to distinguish various contents inside the intestinal lumen and could act as "artificial sensory nerve".

Dogs are increasingly recognized as valuable large animal models for understanding human intestinal diseases, as they naturally develop conditions similar to those in humans, such as Enterohemorrhagic , , inflammatory bowel disease, and ulcerative colitis. Given the similarity in gut flora between dogs and humans, canine intestinal models are ideal for translational research. However, conventional extracellular matrix-embedded organoids present challenges in accessing the lumen, which is critical for gut function.

Foreign body ingestion is sometimes missed during the initial evaluation of a patient with a psychiatric disorder in the emergency department. This is often due to a lack of awareness regarding the need for thorough physical and diagnostic imaging examinations. Additionally, the management of ingested foreign bodies is often controversial.

Mucosal secretory IgA (SIgA) produced by subepithelial plasma cells in the lamina propria is the major antigen-specific defense mechanism against mucosal infections. We investigated if a retinoic acid (RA)-containing adjuvant in parenteral immunization, can induce vaccine-specific SIgA in the jejunal lumen in a dose-dependent manner in neonatal pigs immunized with a Chlamydia hybrid antigen. To accurately quantify SIgA responses in mucosal secretions, an antigen-specific ELISA method with secondary detection of porcine secretory component rather than IgA was developed.

Trichobezoar or hairball in the proximal part of the gastrointestinal tract is a rare condition that occurs mainly in young and adolescent females. Since human hair is resistant to digestive enzymes and resistant to peristalsis, it easily accumulates between the folds of the mucosa. Over time, food and mucus accumulate within the hair, forming a compact mass that fills almost the entire lumen.

Ascariasis is a prevalent intestinal helminthic infection caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, commonly known as roundworm. While the disease may remain asymptomatic when the parasites are confined to the intestinal lumen of the small bowel, symptoms and complications can arise when the helminths invade the biliary tree or pancreatic ducts. In cases of severe infection, a mass of roundworms can lead to intestinal complications, such as bowel obstruction.
