In Arabidopsis roots, some epidermal cells differentiate into root hair cells. Auxin regulates root hair positioning, while ethylene controls cell elongation. Phyllobacterium brassicacearum STM196, a beneficial strain of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) isolated from the roots of field-grown oilseed rape, stimulates root hair elongation in Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings. We investigated the role of ethylene in the response of root hair cells to STM196 inoculation. While we could not detect a significant increase in ethylene biosynthesis, we could detect a slight activation of the ethylene signalling pathway. Consistent with this, an exhaustive survey of the root hair elongation response of mutants and transgenic lines affected in the ethylene pathway showed contrasting root hair sensitivities to STM196. We propose that local ethylene emission contributes to STM196-induceed root hair elongation.

Pilomatrixoma, also called Malherbe's calcifying epithelioma or pilomatrixoma, is a benign adnexal tumor that originates from keratinocytes (cells of the hair matrix, the internal sheath of the hair root or the cortex) and constitutes the second most prevalent skin neoplasm in children. These lesions are typically slow-growing, firm, nodules located on the head, neck, trunk, and extremities (in decreasing order of frequency). Due to the rarity, combined with their varied clinical presentations, pilomatrixomas are often misdiagnosed.

Lotus japonicus-ROOT HAIR LESS1-LIKE1 (LRL1) of Arabidopsis thaliana encodes a basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor (TF) involved in root hair development. Root hair development is regulated by an elaborate transcriptional network, in which GLABRA2 (GL2), a key negative regulator, directly represses bHLH TF genes, including LRL1 and ROOT HAIR DEFECTIVE6 (RHD6). Although RHD6 and its paralogous TFs have been shown to connect downstream to genes involved in cell morphological events such as endomembrane and cell wall modification, the network downstream of LRL1 remains elusive.

Vitamin D is essential for healthy skeletal growth and is increasingly recognised for its role in chronic disease development, inflammation and immunity. 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations are an indicator of vitamin D status and are normally analysed in plasma or serum samples in clinical settings, while archaeological studies rely on the identification of skeletal markers of vitamin D deficiency, such as rickets. Here, we determined 25(OH)D concentrations in hair specimens ('locks') that had been sampled close to the root, aligned by cut end, and sliced into sequential segments from participants (n = 16), from Aberdeen, Scotland, using a modified protocol designed to minimise sample size.

Root development is a complex process involving phytohormones and transcription factors. Our previous research has demonstrated that is significantly expressed in Bok choy roots under salt stress, and heterologous expression of increases salt tolerance and promotes root development in transgenic . However, the precise molecular mechanisms by which BcWRKY33A governs root development remain elusive.

Rhizomorphs are hair- or wire-like melanized structures with structural differentiation analogous to plant roots that help fungi spread over an area and find food resources. Some species of multiple groups of the and the produce different types of rhizomorphs. In the , the structures are largely found in , particularly in the , , and .
