Objective: To study the performance values of a set of five immunohistochemical markers involved in cell cycle regulation as a potential aid in the differential diagnosis between squamous intraepithelial lesions (SILs) and normal or benign conditions of the uterine cervix.
Study Design: Results from immunohistochemical evaluation of p16, cyclin D1, p53, Ki67, and ProEx C markers and human papillomavirus genotyping were collected from a previous study performed on 37 normal or benign cervices, 39 low grade SILs and 73 high grade SILs. A multivariate analysis was used to examine the specific diagnostic value of each marker and to ascertain those most relevant for SIL diagnosis. For markers with good data fit, sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, and integrated discrimination improvement, were calculated.
Results: Among individual markers, ProEx C showed the best specificity; p16 displayed the highest sensitivity and area under receiver operating characteristic curve for SIL diagnosis. Integrated discrimination improvement demonstrated that the p16 plus ProEx C model has better discrimination capacity than p16 plus Ki67 or ProEx C plus Ki67.
Conclusion: Use of ProEx C alone or in combination with p16 could provide useful information for SIL diagnosis.

Sarcoidosis is a granulomatous disease affecting multiple organ systems and poses a diagnostic challenge due to its diverse clinical manifestations and absence of specific diagnostic tests. Currently, blood biomarkers such as ACE, sIL-2R, CD163, CCL18, serum amyloid A, and CRP are employed to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of sarcoidosis. Metabolomics holds promise for identifying highly sensitive and specific biomarkers.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the degradation of end-of-life BWRO membranes sourced from a factory in France by analyzing their water permeability, roughness, and chemical composition in order to diagnose the level of degradation incurred during their first life cycle in water softening. Following this, two new applications for the end-of-life BWRO membranes were investigated: (i) as ultrafiltration membranes (UF) for domestic effluent treatment and (ii) as cation exchange membranes (CEM) for use in fungal microbial fuel cells (FMFC). The UF membrane was renovated with an acetic acid treatment and, subsequently, used for domestic effluent filtration.

Sepsis is a disease with a high mortality rate, which emphasizes the importance of developing tools for the early identification of high-risk patients and to initiate timely treatments to reduce mortality. The SIL score is a scale that uses the shock index and arterial lactate level to identify early on the patients that are at a high risk of in-hospital mortality due to sepsis. The purpose of this study was to validate the SIL score as a tool for estimating the probability of sepsis in-hospital mortality from the triage room in emergency departments.
