Over a 23-month period, 25 patients aged 11 to 74 years presented to our Level I trauma center with odontoid lateral mass asymmetry of 2 to 5 mm on properly centered AP open-mouth X-rays: 32% of patients were asymptomatic, 68% had cervical pain, and 32% had limited range of motion. Patients with cervical spine fractures or dislocations and those with fixed deformity were excluded. The clinical significance of asymmetry was determined utilizing dynamic axial CT scanning of the occiput (C0), atlas (C1) and axis (C2) with the head neutral and with 15 degrees to 30 degrees active rotation. Nineteen patients demonstrated greater than 5 degrees of relative motion of C1 on C2 bilaterally. Three patients had less than 5 degrees of relative motion bilaterally and three patients had less than 5 degrees relative motion with left rotation only. No patient had formal treatment and all had nearly normal cervical range of motion on clinical examination at the time of hospital discharge. The finding of an asymmetric odontoid-lateral mass interspace on properly centered open-mouth AP X-rays in the presence of otherwise normal cervical spine X-rays, in conscious patients without fixed deformity, appears to be incidental and requires no further evaluation or treatment.

Background: Texas is one of the states with the lowest access to usual sources of primary care; most critically, family medicine (FM) has been projected to have the greatest physician shortage increase between 2018 and 2032. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) School of Medicine developed the Family Medicine Accelerated Track (FMAT), a 3-year curriculum that culminates in the MD degree and links medical students to FM residency programs at TTUHSC campuses in Lubbock, Amarillo or the Permian Basin. This article reflects on 10 years of experience with the program, and particularly its impact on the primary care physician workforce in Texas.

Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment for treatment-resistant depression (TRD). There are limited data on the improvement of anxiety symptoms in patients receiving ECT for TRD.
Objective: The aim of the study was to examine the extent to which anxiety symptom severity improves, relative to improvements in depressive symptoms, in TRD patients receiving an acute course of ECT.

A considerable quantity of microplastic debris exists in the environment and the toxicity of these materials has a notable impact on aquatic ecosystems. In this paper, 50-500 µm polystyrene microplastics (exposure concentrations were 200 µg/L, 800 µg/L, and 3200 µg/L concentrations) were selected to study the effects of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on cell morphology, detoxification enzyme activity, and mRNA expression in the liver tissues of crucian carp juveniles. The results demonstrated that: (1) Different concentrations of PS-MPs cause varying degrees of pathological and oxidative damage to liver tissue cells of crucian carp.

Illegal solid waste dumping is a significant factor contributing to environmental damage. In this study, 16S rRNA gene sequencing technology was used for the identification and assessment of environmental damage in an illegal dumping area in China, with the aim of confirming environmental damage through analyzing changes in the soil bacterial communities across slag, sewage sludge, and non-contaminated areas. The results indicate that the diversity of soil bacteria decreases with an increase in the degree of pollution.

Co-products from the frozen fish processing industry often lead to financial losses. Therefore, it is essential to transform these co-products into profitable goods. This study explores the production of fish protein hydrolysates (FPH) from three co-products: the heads and bones of black scabbardfish (), the carcasses of gilthead seabream (), and the trimmings of Nile perch ().
