Congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) are pigmented birthmarks that affect up to 80% of the skin surface area. The increased frequency of CMN in families of severely affected individuals is suggestive of a predisposing germline genotype. We noted a high prevalence of red hair in affected families, and considered a role for MC1R in this condition. A cohort of 166 CMN subjects underwent pigmentary phenotyping, with MC1R genotyping in 113. Results were compared with a local control group of 60 unrelated children and with 300 UK children without CMN. CMN subjects had higher prevalences of red hair and a red-haired parent than local controls and had a higher rate of compound heterozygosity and homozygosity for MC1R variants. The presence of a V92M or R allele (D84E, R151C, R160W, D294H) was associated with increasing size of the CMN, implying a growth-promoting effect of these alleles. Unexpectedly, the V92M and R151C alleles were also strongly associated with birth weight in the CMN cohort, a finding confirmed in the control group. The effect of germline MC1R genotype on development and severity of CMN led us to investigate potential broader effects on growth, revealing a role for MC1R in normal fetal development.

Recent findings have revealed that melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) deficiency leads to Parkinson's disease-like dopaminergic neurodegeneration in the substantia nigra (SN). However, its precise distribution and expressing-cell type in the SN remain unclear. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed the localization and characteristics of MC1R in the SN using histological methods, including in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry.

Background: Although ultraviolet radiation is the most important risk factor for skin cancer in general, its role in disease control after the diagnosis of melanoma remains to be elucidated.

Objectives: To analyse the association between survival and self-assessed sun protection behaviour after a melanoma diagnosis.

Methods: This was a questionnaire-based pilot study.

, a salt-tolerant plant, has demonstrated antioxidant effects, the ability to prevent prostate enlargement, antifungal properties, and skin moisturizing benefits. This study aimed to explore the anti-melanogenic potential of the 70% ethanol extract of (TME) along with its ethyl acetate (TME-EA) and water (TME-A) fractions. TME (10-200 µg/mL), TME-EA (1-15 µg/mL), and TME-A (100-1000 µg/mL) were prepared and applied to B16F10 cells with or without α-MSH for 72 h.

Little is known about the impact of low- to moderate-penetrance genetic testing for skin cancer, which is a promising approach to skin cancer prevention. To address this deficit, we conducted an analysis comparing changes in skin cancer-related behaviors, distress, and beliefs measured at a baseline and twice after the receipt of skin cancer precision prevention materials containing risk feedback (higher or average risk) among 568 non-Hispanic White (NHW) and 463 Hispanic participants. Regression analyses identified decreased average weekend hours in the sun (β = -0.

Reptiles showcase an extensive array of skin colours and patterns, yet little is known about the genetics of reptile colouration. Here, we investigate the genetic basis of the Clown colour morph found in captive-bred ball pythons (Python regius) to study skin pigmentation and patterning in snakes. We obtained samples by crowdsourcing shed skin from commercial breeders and hobbyists.
