Nano-sized layered aluminium or zinc-manganese oxides were synthesized and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction spectrometry, dynamic light scattering and atomic absorption spectroscopy. These oxides showed efficient water oxidizing activity in the presence of cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate as a non-oxo transfer oxidant. Amounts of dissolved manganese, zinc or aluminium, and water oxidation activities of these oxides were reported and compared with other manganese oxides. A mechanism for oxygen evolution and possible roles for zinc or aluminium ions are also proposed.

For enzyme-based electrochemical devices, an improvement in electron transfer between the enzyme and electrode is important. Thus, we developed a nano-scaled hydrogel that includes an electron mediator and enzyme to realize nano-sized effects that enhance the functions. Three different chain lengths (short, medium, and long) of copolymers composed of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and methacrylic acid N-hydroxysuccinimide ester (MNHS; poly(MPC-co-MNHS), PMS) were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization.

It is a celebratory moment for graphene! This year marks the 20th anniversary of the discovery of this amazing material by Geim and Novoselov. Curiously, it coincides with the century mark of graphite's layered structure discovery. Since the discovery of graphene with the promise that its outstanding properties would change the world, society often wonders where is graphene? In this context, their discoverers said in 2005, "despite the reigning optimism about graphene-based electronics, "graphenium" microprocessors are unlikely to appear for the next 20 years".

Thin or ultra-thin dielectric layers have been widely used in various applications such as capacitors, piezo-electrics, and solar cells. This study explains the mechanism and chemistry of creating nano- and micron-sized openings in atomic-layer-deposited aluminum oxide-based dielectric layers using the alkali metal salt selenization technique. The necessary components for this mechanism are excess methyl groups present in the dielectric layer, supply of selenium and alkali metals, and a minimum annealing temperature.
