Clinico-cytochemical (with the use of NBT test) studies of 27 patients with T. rubrum-induced trichophytosis of the soles has demonstrated a functional imbalance of the peripheral blood phagocytizing cells. Reduced neutrophil activity is associated with a compensatory elevation of mononuclear fungicidal potential. Chlorophyllipt administration corrected the metabolic shifts.

In recovered COVID-19 patients, the state of mucosal immunity remains understudied. Cytological, functional, and metabolic characteristics of neutrophils and the interleukin status will help to correctly assess the need for immunorehabilitation measures. The study objective is to assess the state of mucosal immunity after COVID-19.

Modulatory Contribution of Oxygenating Hydrogels and Polyhexamethylene Biguanide on the Antimicrobial Potency of Neutrophil-like Cells.

Neutrophils are a first line of host defense against infection and utilize a series of oxygen-dependent processes to eliminate pathogens. Research suggests that oxygen availability can improve anti-infective mechanisms by promoting the formation of reactive oxygen species. Also, oxygen can synergistically upregulate the antibacterial properties of certain antibiotics against bacteria by altering their metabolism and causing an increase in the antibiotic uptake of bacteria.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined the estrogen-like effects of commonly used parabens (methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, and butylparaben) on human neutrophils, focusing on their mechanism of action.
  • Neutrophils were isolated from donors, pre-treated with estrogen receptor blockers, and exposed to parabens to measure cytotoxicity, apoptosis, chemotaxis, phagocytosis, and superoxide production.
  • Results indicated that parabens did not harm neutrophil viability or function, suggesting they do not exert estrogen receptor-mediated effects at typical exposure levels found in humans.

The cytokine Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) exerts powerful immunoregulatory effects on the adaptive immune system and also enhances functions of the neutrophil (PMN). The clinical use of IFN-γ has been driven by the finding that its administration to patients with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) results in decreased incidence and severity of infections. However, IFN-γ has no effect on the characteristic defect of CGD, the inability to convert oxygen to microbicidal metabolites including superoxide anion (O2-) during the phagocytosis associated oxidative burst.

The aim of the study was to investigate the phagocytic and metabolic activity of peripheral blood neutrophils in rats with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced periodontitis combined with chronic thiolactone hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy). The experiment included non-linear mature male rats (n=48), which were divided into 4 groups: control; animals with a periodontitis model; animals with a model of chronic thiolactone HHcy; animals with a model of periodontitis in combination with chronic thiolactone HHcy. Phagocytic activity, phagocytic index and phagocytic number were determined as indicators of phagocytosis of peripheral blood neutrophils.
