Objectives: The main aim was to study the effects of COMT polymorphisms on response of risperidone treatment for schizophrenia and investigate the correlation between memory function of schizophrenia patients and COMT polymorphisms.

Design And Methods: Subjects were 83 schizophrenic patients who were antipsychotic drug free at the initiation of this study. Peripheral blood samples were obtained to identify COMT polymorphisms by using a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Clinical Global Impressions (CGI), Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS) test were used to assess the effect of risperidone treatment.

Results: The Val/Met carriers showed a significant increase in change of P300 during treatment (P=0.032). Association of Val/Met carriers performed better than other genotypes (P=0.028). The mean plasma concentration of prolactin of Val/Val carriers was significantly lower (P=0.017).

Conclusions: The COMT polymorphisms may be a potential biomarker for clinical risperidone treatment in schizophrenia.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is linked to ion channel dysfunction, including chloride voltage-gated channel-4 (CLCN4). We generated Clcn4 knockout (KO) mice by deleting exon 5 of chromosome 7 in the C57BL/6 mice. Clcn4 KO exhibited reduced social interaction and increased repetitive behaviors assessed using three-chamber and marble burying tests.

Background: Colon adenocarcinoma (COAD) is a malignancy with a high mortality rate and complex biological characteristics and heterogeneity, which poses challenges for clinical treatment. Anoikis is a type of programmed cell death that occurs when cells lose their attachment to the extracellular matrix (ECM), and it plays a crucial role in tumor metastasis. However, the specific biological link between anoikis and COAD, as well as its mechanisms in tumor progression, remains unclear, making it a potential new direction for therapeutic strategy research.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a debilitating disorder that can lead to life-long disability, with a high incidence in Saudi Arabia. Secondary epilepsy and cardiac complications are common in CP patients. We present a rare case of a 17-year-old female with CP, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), secondary epilepsy, and a history of post-cardiac arrest, with home medications carbamazepine, risperidone, and sodium valproate.

Background: Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent regulatory cell death, which plays an essential role in bone loss. This study investigated whether the mechanism of risperidone (RIS)-induced bone loss is related to ferroptosis.

Methods: The schizophrenia mice were induced by administering MK-801.

Effect of antipsychotics on the focal adhesion pathway.

World J Biol Psychiatry

School of Medicine, IMPACT, Institute for Innovation in Physical and Mental Health and Clinical Translation, Deakin University, Geelong, Australia.

Unlabelled: Focal adhesions and their dynamic nature are essential for various physiological processes, including the formation of neurites, synaptic function and plasticity. Alterations in these processes have been associated with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Objectives: This study aimed to explore the impact of pharmacological treatments used for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia on the expression of genes involved in the focal adhesion pathway, addressing a gap in understanding the interaction between medication effects and disease pathophysiology.
