We propose and demonstrate a fiber-tip sensor based on an ultra-thin silver diaphragm for highly sensitive and high frequency ultrasonic detection. The diaphragm is prepared by the vacuum thermal deposition method and then transferred to the fiber tip. The sensor demonstrated in this letter has a 300 nm thick diaphragm with an inner diameter of 75 μm, leading to a static pressure sensitivity of 1.6 nm/kPa and a resonant frequency of 1.44 MHz. This sensor has potential applications in many fields such as structural health monitoring and medical ultrasonography.

An ultrasensitive refractive index (RI) sensing technology based on an enhanced Vernier effect is proposed, which integrates a polymer Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) with an open cavity FPI on the tip of a seven-core optical fiber. Interference spectra of the polymer FPI and the open cavity FPI shift to opposite directions as the ambient RI changes, thus leading to the enhanced Vernier effect. Investigations of RI sensitivity and temperature dependence of the proposed fiber sensors are carried out.

A new high-sensitivity, low-cost, Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) sensor allows for the rapid multiplex detection of foodborne pathogens in raw poultry. Self-assembled microspheres are used to pattern a hexagonal close-packed array of nanoantennas onto a side-polished multimode fiber core. Each microsphere focuses UV radiation to a photonic nanojet within a layer of photoresist on the fiber which allows the nanoantenna geometry to be controlled.

Electronic address:

Due to the serious biological toxicity and environmental refractory of heavy metal ions, the detection of heavy metal ions in liquids has attracted great attention. A novel fiber optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor is presented for detecting lead ions (Pb) with temperature compensation. The sensitivity of SPR channel to Pb is up to -41.

Objective: Endovascular surgery requires accurate measurement of parameters such as pressure, temperature, and biomarkers within vessels for real-time tissue response monitoring and ensuring targeted therapeutic interventions. However, the availability of small tip-based sensors capable of precise application, for example, navigating an aneurysm's lumen, is limited. With their capabilities for real-time analysis, flexibility, and biocompatibility, optical fiber sensors (OFS) hold promise in addressing this need.

Fiber-integrated micro/nanostructures play a crucial role in modern industry, mainly owing to their compact size, high sensitivity, and resistance to electromagnetic interference. However, the three-dimensional manufacturing of fiber-tip functional structures beyond organic polymers remains challenging. It is essential to construct fiber-integrated inorganic silica with designed functional nanostructures for microsystem applications.
