Objective: To investigate the effects of epidural block on 24-hour urine protein in rat with preeclampsia (PE).

Methods: Thirty healthy pregnant Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups (each group with 10 rats). From the 14th day of pregnancy, the rats in Group A were given subcutaneous normal saline (0.5 ml) every day in a total of 7 days; the rats in Group B were given subcutaneous L: -nitroarginomethyl ester (L: -NAME) (50 mg) every day in a total of 7 days; and the rats in Group C both were given subcutaneous L: -NAME (50 mg) every day and underwent epidural block with 25 μl of 0.125 % bupivacaine twice every day all in a total of 7 days. The 24-hour urine protein and systolic blood pressure on the 13th and 20th day of pregnancy were measured.

Results: On the 13th day of pregnancy, there was no statistical significant difference in 24-hour urine protein and systolic blood pressure between the three groups (P > 0.05). On the 20th day of pregnancy, 24-hour urine protein and systolic blood pressure all were higher in Group B and C than in Group A (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05)) and all were lower in Group C than in Group B (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05).

Conclusion: Epidural block can decrease 24-hour urine protein and systolic blood pressure in pregnant rat models with PE. This study provides a potential strategy for treatment of PE.

Background: Changes in retinal vessel caliber are crucial for detecting early retinopathy, a significant cause of blindness in individuals with Diabetes Mellitus type 2 (T2DM). This study aims to evaluate the changes in retinal vessel caliber and identify factors associated with these changes in recently diagnosed T2DM patients.

Methods: The study included newly diagnosed T2DM patients (within 6 months of diagnosis) who were free of antidiabetic treatment (except metformin) and matched individuals based on age and blood pressure (BP).

Department of Public Health and Primary Care, Herestraat 49 bus 7003, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium; Faculty of Medicine, Herestraat 49, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium. Electronic address:

Objectives: Adequate protein intake and protein supplementation has a beneficial role in the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia. The achievement and quantification of the recommended total protein intake by sarcopenic older adults receiving protein supplementation has not been studied. The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of protein intake estimated from a combination of four-day food diaries and weighed protein powders against total protein intake estimated from 24-h urine samples.

Background: Adjusting dietary potassium intake based on 24-hour urinary potassium excretion is the primary method of preventing hyperkalemia. Currently, there is no accurate and convenient method for calculating maximum 24-hour urinary potassium excretion in kidney failure without replacement therapy patients. We developed and validated two new models to assess the upper limit of dietary potassium consumption in this high-risk cohort, using the maximum 24-hour urinary potassium excretion as a proxy.

Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a common nosocomial infection in ICU, significantly associated with poor outcomes. However, there is currently a lack of reliable and interpretable tools for assessing the risk of in-hospital mortality in VAP patients. This study aims to develop an interpretable machine learning (ML) prediction model to enhance the assessment of in-hospital mortality risk in VAP patients.

Department of Family Health Care Nursing, School of Nursing, University of California, San Francisco, California, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the dietary factors that may influence depression risk in healthy premenopausal women, revealing that about 30% of participants showed signs of depression.
  • High-risk women consumed more polyunsaturated fats, omega-6 fatty acids, and sucrose, while having lower intakes of beneficial nutrients like galactose, vitamin C, and omega-3s compared to their low-risk counterparts.
  • The results suggest that prioritizing healthier dietary choices, alongside exercise and sleep, could enhance mental health interventions for women approaching menopause.
