Concepts of health and homeostasis are discussed and their connection to longevity is analyzed. Homeostasis is one of cardinal properties of the organism, which arises in evolution basing on mechanisms maintaining stationarity. Health represents the organisms' ability to sustain homeostasis and return to it after action of external disturbances. Maintaining the health of a human determines longevity. The factors affecting the health, aging and longevity are discussed. Potential reserves of longevity are estimated and possible ways to achieve them are provided.

Ketogenesis is a dynamic metabolic conduit supporting hepatic fat oxidation particularly when carbohydrates are in short supply. Ketone bodies may be recycled into anabolic substrates, but a physiological role for this process has not been identified. Here, we use mass spectrometry-based C-isotope tracing and shotgun lipidomics to establish a link between hepatic ketogenesis and lipid anabolism.

A robust innate immune response is essential in combating viral pathogens. However, it is equally critical to quell overzealous immune signaling to limit collateral damage and enable inflammation resolution. Pattern recognition receptors are critical regulators of these processes.

Insulin plays a key role in metabolic homeostasis. insulin-producing cells (IPCs) are functional analogues of mammalian pancreatic beta cells and release insulin directly into circulation. To investigate the in vivo dynamics of IPC activity, we quantified the effects of nutritional and internal state changes on IPCs using electrophysiological recordings.

The zona glomerulosa (ZG) synthesizes the mineralocorticoid aldosterone. The primary role of aldosterone is the maintenance of volume and electrolyte homeostasis. Aldosterone synthesis is primarily regulated via tightly controlled oscillations in intracellular calcium levels in response to stimulation.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic and inflammatory skin disorder characterized by impaired barrier function and imbalanced immunity. Recent advances have revealed that dysbiosis of skin microbiota plays important roles in the pathogenesis and development of AD. Meanwhile, endogenous and external factors contribute to the dysbiosis of skin microbiota in AD.
