MTBE, a gasoline oxygenate, has contaminated drinking water sources for many years. Carcinogenicity studies conducted in animals in the 1990s raised concerns of potential human health risks. Recent industry-sponsored studies have confirmed the carcinogenic effects of this agent and have identified additional sites of tumor induction (i.e., brain). However, the petroleum industry has attempted to portray these recent findings as demonstrating either no effect or no concern for humans. Our paper briefly summarizes the new findings and puts into perspective the totality of carcinogenic effects and health risks on this environmental chemical.

Aortic valve calcification results from degenerative processes associated with several pathologies. These processes are influenced by age, chronic inflammation, and high concentrations of phosphate ions in the plasma, which contribute to induce mineralization in the aortic valve and deterioration of cardiovascular health. Environmental factors, such as wood smoke that emits harmful and carcinogenic pollutants, carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxide (NO), as well as other reactive compounds may also be implicated.

In winemaking, malolactic fermentation (MLF), which converts L-malic acid to L-lactic acid, is often applied after the alcoholic fermentation stage to improve the sensory properties of the wine and its microbiological stability. MLF is usually performed by lactic acid bacteria, which, however, are sensitive to the conditions of alcoholic fermentation. Therefore, the development of wine yeast strains capable of both alcoholic fermentation and MLF is an important task.
