Background: Deliberate and regular exposure to premium motor spirit fumes is common and could be a risk factor for liver disease in those who are occupationally exposed. A possible association between premium motor spirit fumes and plasma levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol using a rodent model could provide new insights in the pathology of diseases where cellular dysfunction is an established risk factor.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible effect of premium motor spirit fumes on lipids and lipoproteins in workers occupationally exposed to premium motor spirit fumes using rodent model.

Materials And Methods: Twenty-five Wister albino rats (of both sexes) were used for this study between the 4(th) of August and 7(th) of September, 2010. The rats were divided into five groups of five rats each. Group 1 rats were not exposed to premium motor spirit fumes (control group), group 2 rats were exposed for 1 hour daily, group 3 for 3 hours daily, group 4 for 5 hours daily and group 5 for 7 hours daily. The experiment lasted for a period of 4 weeks. Blood samples obtained from all the groups after 4 weeks of exposure were used for the estimation of plasma levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein- cholesterol and low density lipoprotein- cholesterol.

Result: Results showed significant increase in means of plasma total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein levels (P<0.05). The mean triglyceride and total body weight were significantly lower (P<0.05) in the exposed group when compared with the unexposed. The plasma level of high density lipoprotein, the ratio of low density lipoprotein to high density lipoprotein and the ratio of total cholesterol to high density lipoprotein did not differ significantly in exposed subjects when compared with the control group.

Conclusion: These results showed that frequent exposure to petrol fumes may be highly deleterious to the liver cells.

Optimized design of SynRM drive systems for high-efficiency solar water pumps.

Heliyon

October 2024

Bourns College of Engineering, Center for Environmental Research and Technology, University of California at Riverside, Riverside, CA 92521, USA.

This study presents the design and implementation of a Synchronous Reluctance Motor (SynRM) with an integrated drive circuit for a 4-inch submersible pump motor, tailored for small-scale solar photovoltaic water pumping systems. The SynRM operates efficiently at low voltage levels, eliminating the need for a boost converter and allowing direct connection to low-voltage power sources. With a power output of 0.

The biobehavioural pain and movement questionnaire (BioPMovQ): development and psychometric validation of a new questionnaire.

Front Med (Lausanne)

May 2024

Departamento de Cirugía, Ciencias Médicas y Sociales, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de Alcalá, Alcalá de Henares, Spain.

Objective: The purpose of this research was to design and psychometrically validate a new instrument (the Biobehavioural Pain and Movement Questionnaire/BioPMovQ), which assesses the relationship between pain and various factors related to motor behaviour from a biobehavioural perspective.

Methods: A mixed-method design combining a qualitative study with an observational and cross-sectional study was employed to develop (content validity) and psychometrically validate (construct validity, reliability and concurrent/discriminant validity) a new instrument. A total of 200 patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain were recruited.

Assessing the quality of fuel is essential to comprehend its impact on the environment and human health. In this study, the evaluation of fuel quality standards at the consumer level was conducted by analyzing the motor fuels in Khulna, Bangladesh. A total of 32 samples of petrol (regular gasoline), and octane (premium gasoline) were collected from the fuel stations in the Khulna City Corporation area and analyzed with an FTIR-Fuel Analyzer.

Article Synopsis
  • Single-stranded DNA binding proteins (SSBs) are crucial for stabilizing and organizing single-stranded DNA during processes like replication and repair across all life forms.
  • Recent research showed that human SSB2 (hSSB2) can form liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) condensates, which help organize proteins involved in genome maintenance, especially when bound to single-stranded DNA.
  • While E. coli SSB's LLPS is inhibited by ssDNA binding, hSSB2's phase separation actively requires and is enhanced by the presence of ssDNA, indicating different functional roles adapted to their respective organisms.

Following spinal cord injury (SCI), upper extremity (UE) weakness may impede one's ability to carry out activities of daily living (ADLs). Such a limitation drastically lowers a person's level of independence. Additionally, therapy and the field of assistive technology continue to place a strong premium on the restoration of UE motor function in patients with SCI.
