The development of targeted drug delivery mechanisms in the human body is a matter of growing interest in medical science. The selective release of therapeutic agents at a specific target site can increase the therapeutical efficiency and at the same time reduce the side effects. Light-sensitive liposomes can release a drug by an externally controlled light trigger.

The production of phytylated chlorophyll (Chl ) in , which uses phytylated bacteriochlorophyll (BChl ), is the first step in expanding the light absorption spectra. Unlike the chlorophyll synthase (ChlG) of the sp. PCC6803, ChlGs of angiosperms, including , , , and , showed bacteriochlorophyll synthase activity and resistance to inhibition by bacteriochlorophyllide (BChlide ), geranylgeranylated BChl (BChl ), and BChl , collectively called bacteriochlorins.

Tolyporphins are structurally diverse tetrapyrrole macrocycles produced by the cyanobacterial culture HT-58-2. Although tolyporphins were discovered over 25 years ago, little was known about the microbiology of the culture. The studies reported herein expand the description of the community of predominantly alphaproteobacteria associated with the filamentous HT-58-2 cyanobacterium and isolate a dominant bacterium, Porphyrobacter sp.

Chlorosomes are one of the elegant light-harvesting antenna systems in anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria, whose core is constructed from J-type self-aggregation of bacteriochlorophyll- c, bacteriochlorophyll- d, bacteriochlorophyll- e, and bacteriochlorophyll- f molecules without the influence of polypeptides. Chlorosomal supramolecular models were built up using synthetic porphyrin-type bacteriochlorophyll- d analogues with a methoxycarbonylethenyl, formyl, vinyl, or ethyl group at the 8-position. Their chlorosomal self-aggregates in an aqueous micelle solution showed relatively intense absorption bands around 500-600 nm where antennas of natural oxygenic phototrophs, as well as green sulfur bacteria possessing bacteriochlorophylls- c/ d, absorb light less efficiently; this observation is called the "green gap".

The design of new molecules for photochemical studies typically requires knowledge of spectral features of pertinent chromophores beginning with the absorption spectrum (λ ) and accompanying molar absorption coefficient (ε, m cm ) and often extending to the fluorescence spectrum (λ ) and fluorescence quantum yield (Φ ), where the fluorescence properties may be of direct relevance or useful as proxies to gain insight into the nature of the first excited singlet state. PhotochemCAD databases, developed over a period of 30 years, are described here. The previous databases for 150 compounds have been expanded to encompass 339 compounds for which absorption spectra (including ε values), fluorescence spectra (including Φ values) and references to the primary literature have been included where available (552 spectra altogether).
