Standardized graded exercise test (GXT) protocols are ineffective for testing endurance athletes. Scientists have called for the abandonment of traditional techniques for corroborating "true" maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max), as measured during a GXT. Instead, a new technique, the verification bout subsequent to the GXT, has emerged for establishing the "true" VO2max. The addition of the verification bout reframes how the GXT should be viewed. In this article, we summarize the methods for developing custom GXT protocols, identifying threshold and interpolating power or outdoor running velocity, and implicating the verification bout.

Background: Testing and evaluating athletes is necessary and should include performance, body composition, and nutrition. The purpose of this study was to report assessments of dietary intake, V˙O, and body composition in D1 collegiate athletes and examine relationships between these assessments.
Methods: Dietary intake was assessed with 3-day recalls and compared to recommendations, and body composition was assessed via bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) ( = 48).

Purpose: A square-wave verification bout to confirm maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O 2max ) from a graded exercise test (GXT) has been recommended based on mean responses. This study used the test-retest reliability, mean, and individual differences between the highest V̇O 2 from the GXT (V̇O 2GXT ) and verification bout (V̇O 2verification ) to examine the efficacy of a verification bout in the determination of O 2max in healthy, recreationally trained, well-motivated men.
Methods: Ten men (24 ± 4 yr) completed a GXT on a cycle ergometer followed by a submaximal verification bout to determine V̇O 2GXT and V̇O 2verification .

Purpose: A square-wave verification bout to confirm maximal oxygen uptake ([Formula: see text]O) from a graded exercise test (GXT) has been recommended. This study ascertained if a verification bout is necessary to determine [Formula: see text]O in moderately trained men.
Methods: Ten men (24 ± 4 years) completed familiarization and two treadmill GXTs, followed by a submaximal verification bout to determine [Formula: see text]O and [Formula: see text]O (highest [Formula: see text]O from each testing method).

Purpose: Graded exercise testing (GXTs) is used to determine maximum oxygen uptake ([Formula: see text]). Recently, customized submaximal exercise testing (CSET) completed on both treadmill and cycle ergometry were validated.
Methods: Interrater reliability of the CSET for cycle ergometry was examined.

Purpose: There is no convincing evidence for the idea that a high power output at the maximal lactate steady state (PO) and a high fraction of [Formula: see text]O at MLSS (%[Formula: see text]O) are decisive for endurance performance. We tested the hypotheses that (1) %[Formula: see text]O is positively correlated with the ability to sustain a high fraction of [Formula: see text]O for a given competition duration (%[Formula: see text]O); (2) %[Formula: see text]O improves the prediction of the average power output of a time trial (PO) in addition to [Formula: see text]O and gross efficiency (GE); (3) PO improves the prediction of PO in addition to [Formula: see text]O and GE.
Methods: Twenty-one recreationally active participants performed stepwise incremental tests on the first and final testing day to measure GE and check for potential test-related training effects in terms of changes in the minimal lactate equivalent power output (∆PO_LEmin), 30-min constant load tests to determine MLSS, a ramp test and verification bout for [Formula: see text]O, and 20-min time trials for %[Formula: see text]O and PO.
