o-Benzenedisulfonimide (OBS) has efficiently catalysed the one-pot three-component reaction of ketones and aromatic amines with trimethylsilyl cyanide (TMSCN) giving the corresponding α-amino nitriles in excellent yields (23 examples; average yield 85%). Reaction conditions were very simple, green and efficient. Theoretical calculations have allowed us to explain the mechanism of this reaction which has been found to take place in two phases; the first consists of the nucleophilic addition of the aniline to the ketone and the subsequent dehydration to an imine; the second one consists of the formal addition of cyanide anion to the protonated imine. OBS acts in all steps of this mechanism. Without an acid catalyst, the reaction mechanism is more simple but barriers are sensibly higher. A chiral derivative of OBS was also used and gave fairly good results.

The diverse utility of acyclic vinylsilanes has driven the interest in the synthesis of enantioenriched vinylsilanes bearing a Si-stereogenic center. However, the predominant approaches for catalytic asymmetric generation of Si-stereogenic vinylsilanes have mainly relied on transition metal-catalyzed reactions of alkynes with different silicon sources. Here we successfully realize the enantioselective synthesis of linear silicon-stereogenic vinylsilanes with good yields and enantiomeric ratios from simple alkenes under rhodium catalysis.

Strigolactones (SLs) are methylbutenolide molecules derived from β-carotene through an intermediate carlactonoic acid (CLA). Canonical SLs act as signals to microbes and plants, whereas noncanonical SLs are primarily plant hormones. The cytochrome P450 CYP722C catalyzes a critical step, converting CLA to canonical SLs in most angiosperms.

Phosphonic analogs of octahydroisoindole-1-carboxylic acids are bicyclic proline derivatives of interest in drug design and enzymatic mechanism studies. Here we report the stereoselective synthesis of the - and -fused octahydroisoindole system using oxazoloisoindolone lactam and 1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylic anhydride as advanced chiral precursors, respectively, yielding enantiopure octahydroisoindolone intermediates with the desired stereochemistry at the ring junction. Finally, using these intermediates, the target (1,3a,7a)- and (1,3a,7a)-octahydroisoindole-1-phosphonic acids and their enantiomers were obtained with complete stereocontrol via highly diastereoselective addition of trimethyl phosphite to chiral -acyliminium ions as the key step.

Precisely controlling quantum states is relevant in next-generation quantum computing, encryption, and sensing. Chiral organic chromophores host unique light-matter interactions, which allow them to manipulate the quantized circular polarization of photons. Axially chiral organic scaffolds, such as helicenes or twisted acenes, are powerful motifs in chiral light manipulation.
