Normally, in fish fin regeneration, bone regenerates from bone. But what happens when there is no bone? Singh et al. (2012) show in this issue of Developmental Cell that the bony rays still regenerate from an alternative cell source.

The increasing demand for natural alternatives to synthetic fungicides has prompted research into natural products like essential oils for postharvest disease management. This study investigated the antifungal, antioxidant, cytotoxic, and genotoxic potential of essential oil mixtures derived from oregano, rosemary, and mint against Penicillium digitatum, the predominant fungal pathogen causing green mold in orange fruits. P.

The tumor suppressor LKB1/STK11 plays important roles in regulating cellular metabolism and stress responses and its mutations are associated with various cancers. We recently identified a novel exon 1b within intron 1 of human LKB1/STK11, which generates an alternatively spliced, mitochondria-targeting LKB1 isoform important for regulating mitochondrial oxidative stress. Here we examined the formation of this novel exon 1b and uncovered its relatively late emergence during evolution.

Alternative splicing impacts most multi-exonic human genes. Inaccuracies during this process may have an important role in ageing and disease. Here, we investigate splicing accuracy using RNA-sequencing data from >14k control samples and 40 human body sites, focusing on split reads partially mapping to known transcripts in annotation.

Pancreatic cancer (PCa) is one of the most devastating cancers with few clinical signs and no truly effective therapy. In recent years, our team has demonstrated that nucleolin antagonists such as N6L could be a therapeutic alternative for this disease. In order to study a possible clinic development of N6L (multivalent pseudopeptide), we undertook to study the effect of combination of N6L with chemotherapies classically used for PCa on the survival of pancreatic cancer cells.

According to recent research, with the ever-increasing use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, there has arisen an ever-growing need for high-performance yet low-power circuits that can efficiently process information. Quantum-dot Cellular Automata (QCA) has emerged as a promising alternative to conventional complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology due to its great potential in digital design at nanoscale levels on account of very low power consumption and very high processing speed. However, QCA circuits are inherently prone to faults due to variations in manufacturing processes and due to the influence of environmental factors.
