A sustainable supply of lithium from salt-lake brines is necessary due to the surge in demand of the lithium-battery market. However, the presence of coexisting ions, particularly Na, poses a significant challenge due to the similarities in charge, electronic structure, and hydrated size. The electrochemical system with manganese (Mn)-based lithium-ion (Li) sieves electrodes is a promising method for Li recovery, but often suffers from geometric configuration distortion, which reduces their selectivity and capacity.

Electrocatalysis in metal-organic frameworks is an interplay between the diffusion of charges, the intrinsic catalytic rate, and the mass-transport of reactants through the pores. Here a systematic study is carried out to investigate the role of the electrolyte nature and concentration on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with the PCN-224(Co) MOF in aqueous electrolyte. It was found that the ORR activity is slightly influenced by the nature of the ions in solution, providing that the ionic strength is high enough to minimize the resistivity during the measurement.

Irradiation of condensed matter with ionizing radiation generally causes direct photoionization as well as secondary processes that often dominate the ionization dynamics. Here, large helium (He) nanodroplets with radius ≳ 40 nm doped with lithium (Li) atoms are irradiated with extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photons of energy hν ≥ 44.4 eV and indirect ionization of the Li dopants is observed in addition to direct photoionization of the He droplets.

Considering factors such as crustal reserves, atomic mass, redox potential and energy density, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are regarded as the most promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Transition metal-based layered oxides, especially typical NaMnO, stand out among cathode materials due to their low cost and high energy density. However, NaMnO cathodes face several challenges, including Jahn-Teller distortion, manganese dissolution, structural collapse, irreversible phase transition and significant capacity loss.

Lithium metal electrodes inevitably lead to the decomposition of the liquid electrolyte and lithium dendrite growth, both of which result in the formation of unstable solid electrolyte intermediates (SEIs). Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) are expected to replace liquid electrolytes for optimizing the SEI issues of lithium metal. Herein, a cellulose-based gel electrolyte cross-linked by thiol-modified polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (thiol-modified-POSS) was successfully obtained based on "thiol-ene" click chemistry.
