The frequency distributions of the lineal energy, y, of 160 MeV proton, 150 MeV/u helium, and 490 MeV/u silicon ion beams were measured using a wall-less tissue equivalent proportional counter (TEPC) with a site size of 0.72 µm. The measured frequency distributions of y as well as the dose-mean values, y(D), agree with the corresponding data calculated using the microdosimetric function of the particle and heavy ion transport code system PHITS. The values of y(D) increase in the range of LET below ~10 keV µm(-1) because of discrete energy deposition by delta rays, while the relation is reversed above ~10 keV µm(-1) as the amount of energy escaping via delta rays increases. These results indicate that care should be taken with the difference between y(D) and LET when estimating the ionization density that usually relates to relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of energetic heavy ions.

Purpose: In locations where the proton energy spectrum is broad, lineal energy spectrum-based proton biological effects models may be more accurate than dose-averaged linear energy transfer (LET) based models. However, the development of microdosimetric spectrum-based biological effects models is hampered by the extreme computational difficulty of calculating microdosimetric spectra. Given a precomputed library of lineal energy spectra for monoenergetic protons, a weighted summation can be performed which yields the lineal energy spectrum of an arbitrary polyenergetic beam.

An energy-based theory of autoresonance in driven dissipative chains of coupled generic oscillators is discussed on the basis of a variational principle concerning the energy functional. The theory is applied to chains of delayed Duffing-Ueda oscillators and the equations that together govern the autoresonance forces and solutions are derived and solved analytically for generic values of parameters and initial conditions, including the case of quenched time-delay disorder. Remarkably, the presence of retarded potentials with time-delayed feedback drastically modify the autoresonance scenario preventing the growth of the energy oscillation over specific regions of the parameter space.

The method combining Monte Carlo (MC) simulation and mesh-type cell models provides a way to accurately assess the cellular dose induced by-emitters. Although this approach allows for a specific evaluation of various nuclides and cell type combinations, the associated time cost for obtaining results is relatively high. In this work, we propose a Microdosimetric assessment method for Internal exposure of-emitters based on Mesh-type Cell cluster models (abbreviated as MIMC-).

The choice of appropriate physical quantities to characterize the biological effects of ionizing radiation has evolved over time coupled with advances in scientific understanding. The basic hypothesis in radiation dosimetry is that the energy deposited by ionizing radiation initiates all the consequences of exposure in a biological sample (e.g.

The objectives of this study were to determine the social behavior response to repeated social regrouping (SR), and if social rank and the changes of social rank affect the growth rate and some metabolites and hormones linked to energy status, in "resident" replacement dairy heifers subjected to SR for 205 d. Fourteen dairy heifers (153.3 ± 16.
