Background: It was speculated that fatty tissue originated adipocytokines may play role in pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. These adipocytokines may alter vascular homeostasis by effecting endothelial cells, arterial smooth muscle cells and macrophages. Vaspin is a newly described member of adipocytokines family. We aimed to investigate whether plasma vaspin level has any predictive value in coronary artery disease (CAD).

Methods: Forty patients who have at least single vessel ≥ 70 % stenosis demostrated angiographically and 40 subjects with normal coronary anatomy were included to the study. The vaspin levels were measured from serum that is obtained by centrifigation of blood and stored at -20 (o)C by ELISA method. The length, weight and body mass index of patients were measured. Biochemical parameters including total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein, creatinine, sodium, potassium, hemoglobine, uric acid and fasting glucose were also measured.

Results: Biochemical markers levels were similar in both groups. Serum vaspin levels were significantly lower in CAD patients than control group (respectively; 256 ± 219 pg/ml vs. 472 ( 564 pg/ml, P < 0.02). Beside this serum vaspin level was lower in control group with high systolic blood pressure.

Conclusion: Serum vaspin levels were found significantly lower in patients with CAD than age-matched subjects with normal coronary anatomy. Vaspin may be used as a predictor of CAD.

The relationship of serum vaspin level with clinical parameters in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome.

Cell Mol Biol (Noisy-le-grand)

December 2024

Firat University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Physiology, Elazig, Türkiye.

Vaspin plays a regulatory role in lipid and glucose metabolism and is a therapeutic adipokine against impaired glucose intolerance in obese individuals. We aimed to investigate serum vaspin levels in patients with FMS and whether there was any relationship between vaspin levels and metabolic and clinical parameters in fibromyalgia. A total of 64 female patients who applied to an outpatient clinic due to widespread pain lasting more than three months were included in the study.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the impact of hydrophilic statins (pravastatin and rosuvastatin) on adipokine levels and glucose metabolism in diabetic rats.
  • Diabetic rats treated with pravastatin showed improvements in body weight and fasting blood glucose levels, along with increased adiponectin and vaspin, while rosuvastatin did not significantly impact these factors.
  • Overall, pravastatin was found to be more effective than rosuvastatin in improving metabolic parameters in diabetic rats, suggesting its beneficial role in glucose regulation.

Article Synopsis
  • Diabetes mellitus is linked to high blood sugar and insulin issues, often associated with obesity, wherein the protein vaspin may play a role in insulin sensitivity and metabolic health.
  • A study conducted with 125 participants, including healthy individuals, obese, and non-obese patients with diabetes, utilized standard tests to analyze insulin and vaspin levels.
  • Results indicated that obese patients with diabetes had significantly higher insulin and vaspin levels, suggesting a strong connection between these biomarkers and obesity-related diabetes, pointing to vaspin as a potential tool for improving diabetes management and outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the levels of vaspin in pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) to see its link with insulin resistance and various lipid profiles.
  • It involved 90 women, with 60 diagnosed with GDM and 30 as a control group, measuring several blood parameters via techniques like ELISA and colourimetry.
  • Results indicated that vaspin and insulin levels were significantly higher in GDM patients, but there was no correlation found between vaspin and indicators of insulin resistance or lipid profiles.

Introduction: Elevated levels of serum uric acid (SUA) are strongly associated with several components of the metabolic syndrome, particularly obesity. Previous studies have reported the correlation between SUA levels, xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) activity, and the imbalanced adipokine levels that are characteristic of obesity. In this study, we explored the effect of febuxostat on circulating adipokine profiles in patients with overweight or obesity and asymptomatic hyperuricemia.
