Purpose: the study aimed to compare the quality of life (QOL) and radiotherapy complications among Chinese nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients at different 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) stages adjusting for other variables.

Methods: 511 NPC patients at different 3DCRT stages were enrolled. They were interviewed regarding SF-36, complications and socio-demographic variables and cancer- or treatment- related variables. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) based on SF-36, complications scores as dependent variables, 3DCRT stages as independent variables, and other variables as covariate were established.

Results: The influencing factors of PCS included 3DCRT stages and age group. The influencing factors of MCS included 3DCRT stages and income. Most QOL scores of NPC patients were significantly associated with 3DCRT stage, after accounting for other variables. QOL scores of the patients receiving 3DCRT were the lowest, QOL scores of people after 3DCRT gradually increased. PCS scores of people greater than 5 years after 3DCRT was improved to or even better than the level before 3DCRT. The complications with significantly different scores of patients at different 3DCRT status included xerostomia, throat ache, hypogeusia, caries, hearing loss, snuffles.

Conclusions: Clinicians should pay more attention to older NPC patients and patients with lower income. When patients receive 3DCRT, measures should be taken to reduce radiation injury to improve the patients' QOL.

Background: Volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) may have the highest overall performance for stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) treatment of inoperable early-stage NSCLC. However, in centers lacking the VMAT technique, the dynamic conformal arc therapy (DCAT) technique is potentially the best option for small and rounded NSCLC-SBRT. Therefore, we will comprehensively analyze the advantages of the DCAT versus the other techniques except VMAT in terms of dosimetry, plan complexity, delivery time, γ-passing rates and the interplay effect.

Article Synopsis
  • Neoadjuvant radiotherapy is crucial for treating locally advanced rectal cancer, and this study compares the quality-of-life outcomes between two techniques: three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT).
  • A phase II randomized trial involved 94 patients who received chemoradiotherapy and were assigned to either 3DCRT or IMRT; their quality of life was assessed using specific questionnaires throughout the treatment and at a six-month follow-up.
  • Although the trial ended early due to the futility of its primary endpoint, the results indicated that while emotional functioning improved, other aspects of quality of life declined; notably, IMRT showed better physical and role functioning during the final week

Introduction: Lung cancer continues to be a common form of cancer worldwide and a primary contributor to cancer-related fatalities. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most prevalent form, making up 80% to 85% of newly identified malignant lung tumours, and remains a major concern for worldwide health. Surgical resection is the preferred treatment for localised NSCLC, but more than one-third of patients present with locally advanced, unresectable tumours.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the outcomes of gallbladder cancer (GBC) patients with retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy (RPLN), analyzing their response to treatment via chemotherapy followed by consolidation chemoradiotherapy (CTRT).
  • It focuses on a group of 189 patients, of which 80 had RPLN, comparing their treatment responses and overall survival rates to those without RPLN, noting their similar demographic characteristics.
  • Results indicated that while both groups had comparable response rates to treatment, overall survival was further analyzed using statistical methods, highlighting a complex treatment dilemma for patients with RPLN in locally advanced non-metastatic GBC.

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of four techniques of partial breast irradiation (PBI) including interstitial brachytherapy (ISBT), balloon-based brachytherapy (BBT), Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) and three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) in the treatment for early-stage breast cancer patients after breast-conserving surgery. A systematic search was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines using the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Web of Science databases. The inclusion criteria were clinical trials and observational studies that reported on outcome measures of principal PBI techniques.
