We extend the orbital-specific-virtual tensor factorization, introduced for local Møller-Plesset perturbation theory in Ref. [J. Yang, Y. Kurashige, F. R. Manby and G. K. L. Chan, J. Chem. Phys. 134, 044123 (2011)], to local coupled cluster singles and doubles theory (OSV-LCCSD). The method is implemented by modifying an efficient projected-atomic-orbital local coupled cluster program (PAO-LCCSD) described recently, [H.-J. Werner and M. Schütz, J. Chem. Phys. 135, 144116 (2011)]. By comparison of both methods we find that the compact representation of the amplitudes in the OSV approach affords various advantages, including smaller computational time requirements (for comparable accuracy), as well as a more systematic control of the error through a single energy threshold. Overall, the OSV-LCCSD approach together with an MP2 correction yields small domain errors in practical calculations. The applicability of the OSV-LCCSD is demonstrated for molecules with up to 73 atoms and realistic basis sets (up to 2334 basis functions).

The distinct timescales of synaptic plasticity and neural activity dynamics play an important role in the brain's learning and memory systems. Activity-dependent plasticity reshapes neural circuit architecture, determining spontaneous and stimulus-encoding spatiotemporal patterns of neural activity. Neural activity bumps maintain short term memories of continuous parameter values, emerging in spatially organized models with short-range excitation and long-range inhibition.

Thermal Gradient-Driven Heterogeneous Actuation of Liquid Crystal Elastomers for a Crawling Robot.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut 06269, United States.

Emerging soft robots based on liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) exhibit remarkable capabilities for large reversible shape morphing, enabling them to adapt to complex environments and perform diverse tasks such as locomotion and camouflage. Despite extensive studies, current methods for locally controlled actuation of LCE-based soft robots often involve intricate structural design, complex programming of LCEs, incorporation of multiple materials, or complex actuation methods. Here, we present a simple and efficient approach to achieve multiple deformation modes within a simply programmed LCE structure by harnessing Joule heating-induced thermal gradients across the LCE volume.

Background: Therapeutic antibodies for the treatment of neurological disease show great potential, but their applications are rather limited due to limited brain exposure. The most well-studied approach to enhance brain influx of protein therapeutics, is receptor-mediated transcytosis (RMT) by targeting nutrient receptors to shuttle protein therapeutics over the blood-brain barrier (BBB) along with their endogenous cargos. While higher brain exposure is achieved with RMT, the timeframe is short due to rather fast brain clearance.

Efficient Methanol Oxidation Kinetics Enabled by an Ordered Heterocatalyst with Dual Electric Fields.

Induced by a sharp-tip-enhanced electric field, periodical nanoassemblies can regulate the reactant flux on the electrode surface, efficiently optimizing the mass transfer kinetics in electrocatalysis. However, when the nanoscale building blocks in homoassemblies are arranged densely, it results in the overlap and reduction of the local electric field. Herein, we present a comprehensive kinetic heteromodel that simultaneously couples the sharp-tip-enhanced electric field and charge transfer electric field between different building blocks with any arrangement densities.

Enhancing the local substrate concentration is a crucial strategy in nature for facilitating the proximity of two enzymes. The substrate of the first enzyme is transformed into a by-product that travels to the active site of the second enzyme without external diffusion, then transformed into a product and eventually expelled from the complex. In an effort to optimize the antimicrobial properties of myeloperoxidase from Rhodopirellula baltica (RbMPO), we created a library of fused chimeras between a glucose oxidase (GOx) and RbMPO so that HO could be continuously perfused in the vicinity RbMPO, enabling the production of HOCl or HOSCN, well-known antimicrobial agents.
