Disease tolerance is a host response to infection that limits collateral damage to host tissues while having a neutral effect on pathogen fitness. Previously, we found that the pathogenic lactic acid bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes manipulates disease tolerance using its aerobic mixed-acid fermentation pathway via the enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase, but the microbe-derived molecules that mediate communication with the host's disease tolerance pathways remain elusive. Here we show in a murine model that aerobic mixed-acid fermentation inhibits the accumulation of inflammatory cells including neutrophils and macrophages, reduces the immunosuppressive cytokine interleukin-10, and delays bacterial clearance and wound healing.

Europe is experiencing a significant demographic shift, with aging populations posing economic and social challenges due to increased healthcare costs and a higher prevalence of age-related diseases. Hungary, in particular, faces these challenges acutely due to higher morbidity and mortality rates from a range of chronic age-related diseases and behavioral risk factors. Addressing these issues requires innovative approaches to promote healthy aging.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an opportunistic pathogen that colonizes various body sites, including the nares, skin, and vagina. During pregnancy, colonization can lead to dysbiosis, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and invasive disease. To identify genes contributing to MRSA vaginal fitness, we performed transposon sequencing (Tn-seq) using a murine model of vaginal colonization, identifying over 250 conditionally essential genes.

Humans often display extensive forms of prosocial behavior, frequently beyond what is predicted by inclusive fitness. This observation has led to various models attempting to explain the unique extent of human altruism. While many of these models have been empirically tested, one model, the ancestor-descendant conflict model, which is based on a maximum descendant-leaving strategy, has yet to be explicitly examined with observational human data.

To compare visceral adipose tissue (VAT) mass, lipid profile, and selected adipokines/cytokines in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) with controls, and to explore associations between these markers and VAT. We included 60 JIA patients (30 oligoarticular,30 polyarticular), aged 10-16 years, and 60 age-and sex-matched controls. VAT (g) was estimated by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry.
