Near telomere-to-telomere genome assemblies of Silkie Gallus gallus and Mallard Anas platyrhynchos restored the structure of chromosomes and "missing" genes in birds.

J Anim Sci Biotechnol

January 2025

Frontiers Science Center for Molecular Design Breeding (MOE), State Key Laboratory of Animal Biotech Breeding, and National Engineering Laboratory for Animal Breeding, College of Animal Science and Technology, China Agricultural University, Beijing, 100193, China.

Background: Chickens and ducks are vital sources of animal protein for humans. Recent pangenome studies suggest that a single genome is insufficient to represent the genetic information of a species, highlighting the need for more comprehensive genomes. The bird genome has more than tens of microchromosomes, but comparative genomics, annotations, and the discovery of variations are hindered by inadequate telomere-to-telomere level assemblies.

We tested Pekin ducks with playbacks of 5 different vocalizations plus a no noise and white noise stimulus as our controls (N = 15 ducks/sex/treatment). The "AM long" call is a common vocalization made by both sexes. "Honk" is also produced by both sexes and is thought to be an alarm or distress call.

The effect of genotype and sex on carcass characteristics and fatty acid profile of Pekin broiler ducks.

Food Technology and Safety Division, National Institute for Agricultural and Veterinary Research (INIAV, IP), Quinta do Marquês, 2780-159 Oeiras, Portugal; GeoBioTec - Geobiosciences, Geoengineering e Geobiotechnologies, NOVA School of Science and Technology, Campus de Caparica, 2829-516 Caparica, Portugal.

The aim of this study was to compare two different strains of Pekin duck and to answer one scientific hypothesis: 1) Strain and sex influence live body weight, hot and cold carcass weights and carcass portions weights and yields, fatty acid content, fatty acid total cholesterol and α-tocopherol contents of meat. The study used 50 individuals of each strain in comparison (Cherry Valley and Grimaud) equally divided between both sexes), raised in equal rearing and feeding conditions. The results show that, when raised in equal rearing and feeding conditions and slaughtered at matching age, the strain had no significant influence on live body weight at slaughter, warm and cold carcass weights.

Galliformes and Anseriformes are two branches of the Galloanserae group, basal to other Neognathae. In contrast to Galliformes, Anseriformes have not been thoroughly researched by cytogenetic methods. This report is focused on representatives of Anseriformes and the evolution of their chromosome sets.
