Processing bodies (P-bodies) are cytoplasmic non-membranous domains involved in the regulation of eukaryotic gene expression. Since their discovery, several studies using fluorescence-based strategies have uncovered their pivotal role in mRNA metabolism, particularly during translation repression and/or mRNA degradation. Yet, P-bodies still remain a "black box" in which numerous proteins accumulate next to RNAs to regulate their fate by unknown mechanisms. In this study, we investigated the ultrastructural organization of P-bodies in human cells. Using a wide range of original electron microscopy strategies, including high-pressure freezing and freeze substitution, we found that P-bodies are huge ribonucleoprotein complexes located in the close proximity of mitochondria and ribosomes, in which regulatory factors exhibit differential localization depending on their activity on mRNAs. We describe the first experiment pairing immunogold labeling with electron tomography (immunoelectron tomography) of a human P-body. Overall, the results depict a P-body organization that comprises at least two distinct compartments: a dense core on which peripheral protrusions are anchored.

As a form of visual input, bodily expressions can be maintained and manipulated in visual working memory (VWM) over a short period of time. While the prefrontal cortex (PFC) plays an indispensable role in top-down control, it remains largely unclear whether this region also modulates the VWM storage of bodily expressions during a delay period. Therefore, the two primary goals of this study were to examine whether the emotional bodies would elicit heightened brain activity among areas such as the PFC and extrastriate body area (EBA) and whether the emotional effects subsequently modulate the functional connectivity patterns for active maintenance during delay periods.

During the extraction of membrane proteins from oil bodies (OBs), organic solvents dissolve the lipid core and precipitate proteins through solvent stress. Here the effects of solvent type and defatting sequence on the composition and structure of membrane proteins were investigated SDS-PAGE, FTIR, and SEM-EDS. High purity oleosin (86 %) was obtained by treatment first with a Floch solution and then with cold acetone and petroleum ether after twice washing OBs with urea.

The collections of human remains within our university laboratories and classrooms are considered by many to be integral to teaching osteology. However, as an outgrowth of the Western scientific tradition of mind/body dualism, human remains within skeletal teaching collections are often regarded differently than those in museums or applied contexts. From processing to storage, the personhood of each individual becomes abstracted as we purchase, "inherit," handle, organize, and digitally scan their bones for teaching purposes.
