The evolution of radiation therapy in Uganda has been a journey marked by significant milestones and persistent challenges. Since the inception of radiotherapy services in 1988-1989, there has been a concerted effort to enhance cancer treatment services. The early years were characterized by foundational developments, such as the installation of the first teletherapy units, low-dose-rate brachytherapy units, and conventional simulators, and the recognition of radiation oncologists and medical physicist professionals laid the groundwork for radiotherapy treatment modalities.

Extremal structures with embedded prefailure indicators.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

February 2025

Department of Construction Sciences, Lund University, Lund SE-22100, Sweden.

Preemptive identification of potential failure under loading of engineering structures is a critical challenge. Our study presents an innovative approach to design built-in prefailure indicators within multiscale structural designs with optimized load carrying capabilities utilizing the design freedom of topology optimization. The indicators are engineered to visibly signal load conditions approaching the global critical buckling load at predefined locations.

Cardiovascular and cardiometabolic diseases are leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, driven in part by chronic inflammation. Emerging research suggests that the bone marrow microenvironment, or marrow niche, plays a critical role in both immune system regulation and disease progression. The bone marrow niche is essential for maintaining hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and orchestrating hematopoiesis.

Background: Heart muscle damage from myocardial infarction (MI) is brought on by insufficient blood flow. The leading cause of death for middle-aged and older people worldwide is myocardial infarction (MI), which is difficult to diagnose because it has no symptoms. Clinicians must evaluate electrocardiography (ECG) signals to diagnose MI, which is difficult and prone to observer bias.

Oxygen Activation Biocatalytic Precipitation Strategy Based on a Bimetallic Single-Atom Catalyst for Photoelectrochemical Biosensing.

Anal Chem

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Optic-Electric Sensing and Analytical Chemistry for Life Science, MOE; College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, Qingdao University of Science and Technology, Qingdao 266042, PR China.

Article Synopsis
  • The traditional biocatalytic precipitation (BCP) method has limitations due to HO's tendency to self-decompose, affecting its effectiveness in quantitative analysis.
  • Researchers discovered that a bimetallic single-atom catalyst (Co/Zn-N-C SAC) can activate dissolved oxygen to create reactive oxygen species, leading to improved detection methods.
  • The development of a new oxygen-activated photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor for chloramphenicol (CAP) detection demonstrates enhanced stability and accuracy by using Co/Zn-N-C SAC and cesium platinum bromide nanocrystals (CsPtBr NCs) without needing external reactants.
