In a recent paper the authors hypothesized that the so called fractal-like enzyme kinetics of intracellular reactions may explain the preconditioning effect in biology (Vasilescu C, Olteanu M, Flondor P, Revue Roumaine de Chimie. 2011; 56(7): 751-7). Inside cells the reaction kinetics is very well described by fractal-like kinetics. In the present work some clinical implications of this model are analyzed. Endotoxin tolerance is a particular case of preconditioning and shows similarities with the immunodepression seen in some sepsis patients. This idea offers a theoretical support for modulation of the enzymatic activity of the cell by changing the fractal dimension of the cytoskeleton.

This study reported a one-spot preparation of magnetic composite carbon (MCC@Fe) from microcrystalline cellulose (MC). The pure cellulose was impregnated in iron (III) chloride solution and carbonized at 650 °C. The MCC@Fe composite adsorbent underwent various characterization techniques.

The removal of Sunset Yellow (E110) on natural zeolite and zeolite modified with the cationic surfactant cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC) was studied using the adsorption method. The structural characteristics of the surfactant-modified zeolite (SMZ-CPC) were investigated using X-ray diffraction(XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. The effect of different parameters on the adsorption process, such as equilibration time and amount of adsorbent at 298 K, were determined using UV-Vis spectroscopy.

The presence of antibiotics in water sources is a significant concern due to their potential environmental impact and the risks to human health. In the present research, hierarchically mesoporous UiO-66 (HP-UiO-66) with a high surface area (1011 m/g) and large pore volume was synthesized using the reflux method on the liter scale. The successful synthesis was confirmed by FT-IR, XRD, FESEM/EDS, N-adsorption/desorption, and zeta potential techniques.

In this study, magnetic inulin/Mg-Zn-Al layered double hydroxide (MILDH) was synthesized for the adsorption of ciprofloxacin. The application of various analytical techniques confirmed the successful formation of MILDH. For the optimization of controllable factors, Taguchi design was applied and optimum values were obtained as equilibrium time─100 min, adsorbent dose─20 mg, and ciprofloxacin concentration─30 mg/L.

Moving toward a circular plastics economy is a vital aspect of global resource management. Chemical recycling of plastics ensures that high-value monomers can be recovered from depolymerized plastic waste, thus enabling circular manufacturing. However, to increase chemical recycling throughput in materials recovery facilities, the present understanding of polymer transport, diffusion, swelling, and heterogeneous deconstruction kinetics must be systematized to allow industrial-scale process design, spanning molecular to macroscopic regimes.
