Peptide nucleic acids (PNAs) are DNA analogues in which the nucleic acid backbone is replaced by a pseudopeptide backbone and nucleobases are attached to the backbone by methylene carbonyl linkers. γ-Carbon modification of the PNA structure allows monomers, and subsequently oligomers, with improved properties to be obtained. In this study, we report the convenient synthesis of γ-lysine-modified PNA monomers for pyrimidine bases (thymine and cytosine) with high optical purity (> 99.5%) and direct enantiomer separation of γ-lysine-modified PNA analogs, using chiral HPLC to determine the optical purity.

Background: Fractionation of microalgal cells has important applications in producing pharmaceuticals and treating diseases. Multiple types of microalgal cells generally coexist in the oceans or lakes and are easily contaminated by microplastics and bacteria. Therefore, it is of paramount significance to develop an effective fractionation approach for microalgal cells for biological applications.

The commercialization of metasurfaces is crucial for real-world applications such as wearable sensors, pigment-free color pixels, and augmented and virtual reality devices. Nanoparticle-embedded resin-based nanoimprint lithography (PER-NIL) has shown itself to be a low-cost, high-throughput manufacturing method enabling the replication of high-index nanostructures. It has been extensively integrated into the fabrication of hologram metasurfaces, metalenses, and sensors due to its procedural simplicity.
